What was Kate Middleton’s Baftas 2018 dress and why didn’t she wear black?
AT this year’s Golden Globes, stars took to the red carpet dressed in black as a show of support to the Time’s Up movement and to protest against sexual harassment.
And the BAFTAs 2018 are following suit. But did Kate Middleton opt to wear black and if she did why could her decision break royal protocol?
Why are stars wearing black to the Baftas 2018?
The sexual harassment group Time’s Up was formed in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein allegations back in October.
They encouraged guests at the Golden Globes to wear black in a show of solidarity to the movement and some attendees of this year’s Baftas are following suit.
Supporters of the Time’s Up movement included Jennifer Lawrence and Brit newcomer Florence Pugh.
In his foreword to the official programme Prince William appeared to reference the Time’s Up campaign, mentioning “a year when many brave people spoke up about bullying, harassment and abuse”.
What did Kate Middleton wear to the Baftas?
For the 2018 Baftas, Kate wore a dark green £3,000 gown by Jenny Packham - not quite the black dress code worn by those supporting the Time's Up movement.
However, she wore a black sash with the dress which is an acknowledgement without making a political statement.
There was complete silence and no applause when 36-year-old Kate entered London’s Royal Albert Hall alongside Bafta president husband Prince William, 35.
Why would wearing black break royal protocol?
Kate could face repercussions if she had worn black as it may be seen as a political statement, which is against the Royal Family’s rules.
She was in a difficult position as if she completely refused to wear black, she could be open to criticism for not using her platform to make a stand against sexual harassment and women’s rights.
One guest at the showbiz bash demanded: “How is supporting equality for women political?”

Has Kate broken royal protocol before?
Yes. She and William often shun Christmas at Sandringham House to spend the day with George, four, and Charlotte, two.
Kate is also her family’s official photographer and is behind some of the sweetest official shots of her own children.
And some have noted that Kate’s dresses often come above the knee, which has been seen as a big no.
