When to use "yours sincerely" and "yours faithfully "when writing a letter

The way you sign off a letter all comes down to the context.

Do you know the person you're writing to, or is it a formal letter?

As a general rule, sign-offs are as follows:

  • Yours sincerely - when you know the person you are addressing. Eg. Mr Smith
  • Yours faithfully - when you don't know the person. Eg. Dear Sir/Madam
  • Best wishes - someone you already have a connection with - only use if it makes sense in relation to the context of your letter
  • Regards - indicates professionalism and respect, use if you already know the person's name
