Captioning the thread: “I house-sat for some friends and they've billed me!” she went on to explain the ludicrous situation.

She said: “They've been away for a month-long honeymoon and asked if I'd like to flat-sit.

“I jumped at the chance because it's lovely there and it's much closer to where I work.

“I didn't eat their food. I didn't drink their wine.

“I fired up the computer once to complete a learning module.

“I did cook a lot and watch a s*** load of Sky. I cleaned before I left and changed their sheets for them.

“I left milk and fresh bread and a note saying thanks!”

But upon their return, she says: “I got a message to say 'thanks for looking after the place. Alright if we ask for a donation to cover a few bills? £300 okay?'”

Fellow mumsnetters are outraged, with hundreds of comments questioning the cheek of the couple.

One said: “Absolutely scandalous! I would not pay this!”

Others said: “That's a new level of cheeky f*****y. You CANNOT pay this! It's outrageous!"

This person replied: “Please don’t give them a penny, you did them the favour, not the other way round.”

And another said: “WTAF?!! Surely they should be paying you for house sitting??”

One person said: “That is taking the p*** and then some. I wouldn't even know where to start with a response.”

The amount was also an issue, with one person posting: “£300 is taking the p***. That isn't a token amount.”

The house-sitter explained they lived in a “nice area with good transport links”, while she lived somewhere “you're more likely to get mugged”.

Despite the location, she didn’t save any money on travel as she already bought a travel card.

While her partner stayed round some nights, she claims to have kept the heating to a minimum and had one shower a day.

She watched a Sky box set, questioning whether she was charged for this to reflect to astronomical bill.

And she even donated £50 to their honeymoon, and debated whether they were asking for money as they “did go nuts” on their trip.

To complicate the situation, her partner confessed he may have drunkenly agreed to contribute some funds, but couldn’t remember the details.

But people urged the woman not to pay, and not to let her partner pay either.

Lots of people thought she should reconsider them as friends, saying: “Wow! These people are not your friends! Don’t pay them and don’t respond to the text!!”

One person thought it was the end of the friendship, saying: “The friendship is over either way at this point, one couple is going to feel massively hard done by and resentful.”

Another wrote: “Your DH [dear husband] is a wet flannel and you're just allowing it to happen what is wrong with you. Don't give them £300!!”

And this person agreed, saying: “Your DP [dear partner] sounds like a doormat letting his mate walk all over him.”

People commented she should send a counter-bill for her services and the bread and milk, confront them head-on or ask for an itemised breakdown of the £300.
