Celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton claims that mousse is the top hair staple you need

Celebrity hair stylist Andrew Barton claims that mousse isn't just for crispy retro curls - it should be used for straight styles, too.

HAIR mousse might remind you of crispy curls and overwhelming chemical smells but celebrity hair stylist Andrew Barton insists it's making a comeback.

The hairdresser has styled the likes of Cindy Crawford, Elle Macpherson and Tom Cruise in his 30 year career.

And now he says mousse should be the must-have product for everyone, no matter their hair type.

"It's the one product I can't get by without," says Barton, who has his own hairdressing product line, .

"The polymers in mousse bind the fibres of hair together, resulting in fuller, thicker hair strands and protecting against the environment.

"It'll prolong the life of your blow-dry and will mean that it wont budge out of place on damp days or in humidity."

And when it comes to applying it so that we don't look like we're sporting an early-'80s-style perm what does he suggest?

"Start by sectioning hair into two sections, one on the underneath, one on the top.

"Then, squirt a golf size ball of mousse from the can into the palm of your hand, and use the hand like a rake.

"'Rake' the product through the hair from the roots to the tips and brush through with a comb to ensure that the mousse is fully coating the hair.

"Always apply styling products to damp, not wet, hair - and always start to blow dry your actual style into your hair once it is 80% dry.

"Mousse will help your style stick, especially straight styles as it'll add a sleek feel."
