Cheating website Ashley Madison, which is exclusively for married people who seek out affairs, surveyed 3,000 of its members.

More than half of both men and women said they would forgive a cheating partner.

However, some 59 per cent of men said they could put it behind them, while only 51 per cent of women said they could.

For men, the main reason for sticking by their wives would be the impact a split would have on their children.

The second most common reason to stay together was they still loved their wives, while the finances was the third reason.

And lastly, forgiveness was a factor.

For women, it seems it's business before pleasure with finances the top reason given for staying together after finding out about an affair.

In second place was the kids, while third was still having feeling for their partner.

And like men, forgiveness was the fourth reason.

“Many of our members still love their partners very much, and their marriages are otherwise happy.

“So we want to provide them with the tools they need to fulfil all their desires, while having enough discretion to have their extra-marital activities remain undiscovered and their marriage intact.”
