Meghan Markle’s dad says royal role is putting her under strain and claims ‘Diana would have loathed the way I’ve been treated’
MEGHAN Markle's father Thomas has hit out at the Palace, claiming Princess Diana would have "loathed" the way he's been treated.
The 74-year-old, who was too ill to walk his daughter down the aisle when she wed Prince Harry in May, claimed he has been cut off by the royals after agreeing to staged paparazzi pictures.
In an interview with the , Thomas said: "They [the Royal Family] have Meghan treating her father in a way that Harry's mother, Princess Diana, would have loathed.
"That's not what Diana stood for."
Thomas's comments about Prince Harry's late mum are likely to upset the couple but the former lighting director added: "I don't care if Harry never speaks to me again, I'll survive."
He believes that his daughter, who celebrates her 37th birthday next week, will be the one to bring the Royals "into the 21st century".
He said: "Princess Diana is credited with changing the Royal Family, but she wasn't perfect.
"She was still very much one of them."
Speaking of Meghan's new father-in-law Prince Charles, Mr Markle added: "He is a man of fine style and elegance. I admire his choice of tailor."
He added that Charles will be a good King, claiming that he will "wear that crown well".
But he also asked: "Who cares these days about a dusty old crown?"
Thomas, who previously said he was heartbroken that his daughter wasn't in contact, said he longed to hear from her.
He fears his daughter has been changed by her newly royal status and there will be no chance of reconciliation, following their fall out over the staged paparazzi pictures.
He added: "If Meghan never speaks to me again, I don't know how I can go on without my heart breaking."
He also claimed her new role was putting her under strain and that he could tell she was wondering if she was getting it right "every time she crosses her ankles rather than her legs."
He said: "I blame the Royal Family. I can see the strain Meghan's under, it's in her face.
The Royal Family has taken her back to the 1930s, and it's ridiculous."
The comments could worsen the already shaky relationship Meghan has with her family, after her half-sister Samantha Markle also spoke out, claiming Thomas would 'die of sadness' over the royal rift
Thomas added: "I feel for Meghan, because she does have a difficult family, but it's still her family."
