A BAFFLING video which appears to show a mug to be both round and square has taken the internet by storm.

It's the work of Tony Fisher, who runs his own YouTube channel, creating puzzles.

The mug appears clearly round in reality - but square in the mirror

In the video the mug - which Tony proves is genuine by filling up with milk - seemingly appears to be two different shapes.

When looked at in a mirror it is square but from another angle it is round.

But it's not witchcraft - it's physics.

Tony wrote: "The milk and spoon were used to show there was no video trickery. Milk shows up better than other liquids in the gold mug. The mug is based on a shape devised by Kokichi Sugihara."

We've previously reported how Mr Sugihari uses a type of science called anomalous symmetry to create illusions.

This is when illusions appear to break the laws of optical physics by forcing mirrors to reflect what appears to be the opposite of what would normally be reflected - therefore tricking our eyes into seeing something different.

He demonstrated in May how it worked by creating an illusion where an arrow always seemed to point right - when it wasn't happening at all.

Then Mr Sugihara described what was happening - and what has happened to the mug - as "a clever combination of reflection, perspective, and viewing angle produce this striking illusion."

Still, in the comments underneath Tony's clever illusion, people are totally perplexed - and impressed

Vi Piltover wrote: "My mind exploded!"

Another person added: "Your puzzles are so impressive!"
