Women can enjoy orgasms for up to four seconds longer and climax quicker if they use a sex toy, new research has revealed
WOMEN can enjoy orgasms up to four seconds longer if they use a sex aid, a new scientific study has revealed.
Research figures from one of the world’s leading neuroscientists say orgasms are 17 per cent longer than expected when using a sex toy - 23.3 seconds compared to 19.9 seconds manually.
The results emerged after the brain patterns of 17 women were analysed as they climaxed while masturbating by hand and with a vibrator.
Neuroscientist Dr Nicole Prause said: ''The study found that women achieved greater excitement during orgasms with use of a vibrator compared to manual stimulation and their orgasms lasted 17 per cent longer.
“The women’s brainwaves suggest that vibrators may also reduce the effort used to reach an orgasmic state.''
The research was carried out for the launch of a new range of Happy Rabbit vibrators by the British sex toy retailer Lovehoney.
It found Alpha brainwave levels increased sooner when using the vibrator - suggesting women could orgasm using less effort than manually.
It also said emotional reporting suggests subjects felt ''more excited'' from start to finish of testing when using vibrator compared to the hand based session.
Women took an average of 26.4 minutes to achieve orgasm when using the vibrator, compared to manual masturbation which took an average of 6.5 minutes.
The longer time period for sex toy masturbation was because women were enjoying ‘broader physical sensations’ and exploring their sexuality more.
During the research Dr Prause founder of the American biotechnology firm Liberos measured what happens physically and emotionally as a woman approaches orgasm.
Under lab conditions, each woman underwent two tests - one using manual masturbation and the other using the Happy Rabbit.
They pressed a button to indicate the start and finish of their orgasm so its duration could be measured, and sensors picked their levels of excitement.
The testing panel had an average age of 31, two-thirds were heterosexual and all were sexually active.
Dr Prause analysed anal contractions, skin response, electroencephalography or brain activity and emotional states before and after testing.
She added: “Our original hypothesis was that the Happy Rabbit would bring women to orgasm quicker than manual masturbation.
''However, we found that women wanted to play, explore and enjoy their new toy, which resulted in a longer lasting sexual experience with broader physical sensations and more excitement than using their hand alone.”
Lovehoney product director Bonny Hall said: “We now have scientific proof that women enjoy longer and more pleasurable orgasms when using a vibrator.”

Office manager Chloe Jacob is one of small army of sex toy testers used by Lovehoney to make sure its products turn women on.
Chloe, 29, is sent free products ahead of a launch in exchange for her honest opinions on the merits and her reviews are posted on the retailer’s site.
Her views can make or break a new product because only ones with good reviews tend to sell.
Single Chloe loves being a tester and says she does it because she has a high sex drive.
She said: “I am like a kid at Christmas when I get a new box of products. I tend to order every month - two or three toys in the box. It is so exciting to think what I might discover."
Chloe has reviewed 80 toys for Lovehoney and she put the new Happy Rabbit through its paces - and loved it.
She said: “It does give a really good orgasm. It almost takes you by surprise. You’re happily going along with the moment and then, boom, it hits you.
“This was my first rabbit vibrator since I bought my first one when I was 18 or 19. I hadn’t been able to find one since that matched with it so I moved on to other toys.
“But I am pleased to announce that this rabbit has won me over.”
