Princess Diana ‘took Prince Charles to the cleaners’ in divorce settlement worth a reported £17.5m

The late Princess Diana may have lost her Royal title following the high profile split but she was granted a lump sum of £17.5 MILLION of Prince Charles' fortune

IT was one of the most high profile marriage break ups in the Royal Family's history.

But it turns out Princess Diana was given a lump sum of £17.5 MILLION in her divorce settlement with Prince Charles... and his private banker claims she "took Charles to the cleaners" over the course of their difficult split.

The man responsible for Prince Charles' financial affairs during his divorce has told  that the heir to the throne sold his entire investment portfolio to fund the messy split.

Reflecting on his role in the divorce proceedings, Prince Charles' former financial aid Geoffrey Bignell said: "Princess Diana took every penny he had.

"I was told to liquidate everything, all his investments, so that he could give her the cash. He was very unhappy about that."

Because even though Prince Charles makes £12 million a year from his Duchy of Cornwall estate, the heir to the throne is not allowed to sell the property and therefore did not have enough money in his reserves to fund the divorce.

What's more, Prince Charles is thought to have been lent millions from the Queen to fund the costly divorce... and reportedly told friends that Diana's demands were "excessive".

During the messy settlement proceedings, Princess Diana was reportedly advised by her solicitor Anthony Julius to give up "Her Royal Highness" title in a bid for a better financial deal.

Having negotiated a settlement for over two years, Diana was then granted a lump sum of £17.5 million from Prince Charles' fortune in 1996... but lost her Royal title in the process.

And according to author  by Tina Brown, the late Princess also received an annual stipend of £400,000 a year to fund her private office.

After the high-profile divorce was finalised in 1996, Geoffrey was left out of a job because Diana ";took Charles to the cleaners."

He added: "That's when I stopped being his personal financial adviser because he had no personal wealth left."

Although Diana was stripped of her Royal title, the Queen allowed the late Princess to continue to live in the Kensington Palace grounds with her two sons Prince William and Prince Harry.
