Princess Diana was ‘throwing up’ and ‘in tears’ the day before she married Prince Charles… while he questioned if ‘it’s possible to love two women’

It was the wedding of the century but behind the scenes all was not well

IT was the wedding of the century and millions tuned in to watch Princess Diana walk down the aisle to marry her prince.

Dressed in her billowing gown with a glittering tiara, Princess Diana looked as if she was getting her happily-ever-after.

But it has been revealed that behind the scenes all was not well, and the wedding was close to being called off.

The chairs had been laid out, the catering arranged, St Paul’s Cathedral decorated, and the flowers in place.

But the bride and groom were both in turmoil.

Just hours before marrying Prince Charles, it has been revealed Princess Diana suffered a “bulimic attack”.

The revelations have been made in Charles, The Misunderstood Prince, written by Sally Bedell Smith, where she details the hours leading up to the big day.

Diana’s struggles with bulimia are now common knowledge, with the late princess opening up about her eating disorder in recorded tapes.

Numerous friends and confidants have also recalled Diana’s battle with bulimia, but she suffered an acute episode the night before her wedding, unbeknownst to those around her.

The book says: “On her wedding eve at Clarence House, Diana could hear the spectacular fireworks celebrations in Hyde Park.

“Unknown to even her sister Jane, who stayed with her, Diana had a bulimic attack and was as 'sick as a parrot'."

In the days leading up to their wedding, on July 29 1981, it was a similar story.

While the 20-year-old Diana may have appeared blissfully happy to the public, behind closed doors it she was in pieces.

Just two days before the multi-million pound wedding, the couple went through their second wedding rehearsal at the majestic cathedral.

The book says: “Diana looked demure in a high-necked dress with long sleeves and seemed cheerful as she and Charles waved to the crowds when they left the cathedral.

“But in the car, Diana broke down again – 'sobbed my eyes out,' she recalled, 'absolutely collapsed'…the Camilla thing rearing its head.”

It would seem the same issue was on Charles’ mind as well as he prepared to marry his young bride.

Just hours before he was due at the altar, the first-in-line to the throne evaluated his position.

Speaking with his valet, Stephen Barry, Charles confided in him on the eve of his wedding.

The book says: “He did not share the exuberance on display outside the Palace.

“Rather, he was in a contemplative mood.

“As he listened to the choruses of Rule Britannia, Charles found himself weeping.

“Stephen Barry asked what was wrong.

“Stephen,” he said, “Is it possible to love two women at the same time?”

Despite both their fears, the pair tied the knot in front of a congregation of 3,500 people, with some 760 million tuning in to watch the event on TV.

But Camilla Parker-Bowles would be a thorn in Diana’s side throughout her marriage to Prince Charles.

She saw her as the other woman, and it was later revealed the pair had a relationship while Princes Charles was still married.

In her explosive interview with Martin Bashir, Princess Diana infamously said there were “three people” in her marriage.

Prince Charles later went on to marry Camilla in 2005, but she refrains from using the title the Princess of Wales out of respect for Diana.
