When it comes to Christmas it is no surprise there are some strict rules in place which make sure the festive period runs smoothly

WHEN it comes to the Royal family there are lots of traditions and protocols that must be followed on a daily basis.

Each member of the family seems to come with their own set of instructions on titles, greetings and good etiquette.

So when it comes to Christmas it is no surprise there are some already strict rules in place which makes sure the festive period runs smoothly.

In fact the Queen is said to have three traditions when comes to her loved ones opening presents on Christmas Eve.

If you thought your family had some strange rules when it comes to the big day then spare a thought for Wills and co.

The rules are said to date back decades and are at the Queen's order.

The Queen's rules when it comes to opening Christmas presents

  • Prince Philip, who supervises the proceedings, gives the go ahead to open the gifts
  • Presents must be a joke
  • The cheaper the gift the better

Unlike most of us the Royal family will open their presents on Christmas Eve.

They sit down at exactly 6pm in the red drawing room at Sandringham after having tried to place their gifts without being noticed.

Prince Philip, who supervises the proceedings, gives the go ahead to open the presents which must a joke gift - the cheaper the better.
