MEG-A RULE BREAKER

Royal traditions the Queen has broken for Meghan Markle, from inviting her to Christmas to letting her get married in May

Some of these might surprise you

SINCE Meghan Markle became a member of the royal family, she's had to get used to several royal traditions.

But from getting married in May to being invited to Christmas before her and Prince Harry's wedding, it seems some of these traditions may have been relaxed a little.

According to , the Queen has broken a number of royal traditions for her granddaughter-in-law - and some of these might surprise you.

Christmas Day celebrations

Traditionally, annual Christmas celebrations at Sandringham are for royals only.

Last year, the Queen broke tradition by inviting Meghan Markle before she was an official member of the family and this year, Her Maj is said to be bending the rules again by inviting Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland.

Meghan's Coat of Arms

Days after Meghan and Harry's wedding earlier this year, Kensington Palace announced that a Coat of Arms had been created for the new Duchess of Sussex.

Traditionally, it's given to the father of the bride before the wedding, but according to , Meghan's - which has a blue background to represent the Pacific Ocean, gold to symbolise California sunshine and poppies (California's state flower) - does not even include the names of Meghan's parents.

Meghan and Harry's wedding ceremony

When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were married in May, it seems some royal traditions were relaxed a little.

Despite Meghan being divorced, the pair were allowed to marry in a church.

In fact, Prince Harry became the first member of the royal family to marry a divorcee in church.

Meghan was also referred to as "Ms" on the wedding invitations instead of "Miss".

And according to Elite Daily, traditionally only British music is used at royal weddings, but this year, Meghan and Harry were allowed to use American songs, too.

Perhaps the biggest break from tradition was when Meghan's father, Thomas Markle, was unable to attend his daughter's big day.

At Harry's request, the Queen allowed Prince Charles to step in and walk the bride down the aisle.

"I asked [Prince Charles] to and I think he knew it was coming, and he immediately said 'yes, of course, I'll do whatever Megan needs and I'm here to support you'," revealed Harry.

Getting married in May

The location of the ceremony wasn't the only detail overlooked, either.

Queen Victoria (aka the Queen's great-great-grandmother) believed it was unlucky for a couple to marry in May.

The superstition, "marry in May, and rue the day" was upheld until this year, when Meghan and Harry tied the knot on May 19.

Prince Harry's wedding ring

Did you know it's tradition in the UK for the groom not to wear a wedding ring?

Prince Harry became the first member of the royal family to wear one - and he even designed it himself.

Meghan's royal wardrobe

Traditionally, it's believed royal women should cover their shoulders, but it seems this has been relaxed, after the Duchess of Sussex wore an off-the-shoulder Carolina Herrera dress at her first Trooping the Colour event earlier this year.

And it's not the only fashion tradition Meghan is said to have broken.

According to a source speaking to , the Queen isn't a fan of wedges - a type of shoe Meghan wore during her and Harry's first official royal tour.

"Queen Elizabeth II banned wedges a long time ago simply because she doesn't like them," the source said.

"She really doesn't like them and it's well known among the women in the family."

It's believed female members of the royal family are also required to wear flesh-coloured tights with skirts and dresses, however Meghan seemed to step out bare-legged for her and Harry's official engagement photocall last November.

Meghan's wedding speech

During royal weddings, it's tradition for the best man and host to deliver the speeches.

However, Meghan was allowed to give her own speech in which she's said to have thanked her mother Doria and her in-laws for their support.
