Stealing the show in the shot is beaming Prince George, five, who is pictured wearing jeans for the first time.

And people can't get enough of his adorable new look, which includes little Hunter wellies.

One person wrote on Twitter: "Prince George is always the first person my eyes go to when they release photos. Such a cutie."

A second fan said: "I think that's the first time I've seen Prince George in long trousers."

While another said: "PRINCE GEORGE IN LONG PANTS. I REPEAT, LONG PANTS."

Another delighted royal fan wrote: "My favourite picture of them-in jeans!!! Love it, so beautiful!!

While Barbara said: "How great to see Prince George in jeans and wellies instead of short trousers all the time. Lovely picture."

Amy added: " My favourite Christmas card photo they have done so far. Love the natural setting and casual look!"

George is rarely seen in trousers or dungarees and, according to an etiquette expert, there’s a very snobby reason behind it.

William said the dress code harks back to historic traditions that state "shorts are for little boys, trousers are for men".

The first time we saw him don anything other than shorts was at the two royal weddings this year, Prince Harry’s to Meghan Markle in May, and Princess Eugenie’s to Jack Brooksbank in October.

The Christmas card picture also shows a seven-month-old Prince Louis smiling cheekily in his mum Kate Middleton’s arms.

She can be seen perching on a tree next to Prince William, Princess Charlotte, three, and Prince George, who is playfully balancing on his dad's shoulders.

The Kensington Palace caption said: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to share a new photograph of their family.

“The photograph, taken by Matt Porteous, shows The Duke and Duchess with their three children at Anmer Hall, and features on Their Royal Highnesses' Christmas card this year."

Matt also took Prince Louis’ informal christening shots.

In stark contrast, Meghan and Prince Harry's Christmas card is in black and white, and shows the couple facing into the distance as they watch fireworks at their evening wedding reception in May.

The card may have racked up hundreds of comments from people praising how lovely the card it, but some critical fans not being a fan of the couple “turning their backs to the public”.

The image was a poignant choice, as Frogmore Cottage is to be the new home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex next year.

The family cards were released today, along with one from the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall in which the couple are pictured on a bench in their Clarence House garden gazing at each other.

And Prince George wasn't the only one to win an army of new fans thanks to the sweet snap.

People can't get over Princess Charlotte's adorable pose - or how much little Prince Louis has grown.

Peter wrote: "Her Highness Charlotte is such a cutie, with a schemer's eye!"

Tanya said: "Charlotte has Princess Diana's charm!"

Kath Wilson wrote: "Lovely to see Louis, George is growing fast but Charlotte. I mean look at Charlotte.. Have a feeling that young lady will very likely change the world."

William Hanson claims that shorts on young boys are a silent British class marker and trousers are deemed “suburban” – something no self-respecting royal would want to be considered.

He told The Sun Online: “Not only does The Duchess of Cambridge have to worry about dressing herself but she has to dress her own children appropriately.

";She has to find a balance between royal tradition, heritage and more proletariat customs, such as the ‘suburban’ habit of making young boys wear trousers."

William said while he doubts there "would have been a memo sent around Kensington Palace telling George to wear shorts", Kate would be aware of clothing protocol.

It comes as rumours circulate of a "royal rift"between Meghan and sister-in-law Kate Middleton.

They are said to be set for a frosty Christmas gather with the Queen on Christmas Day.

Kensington Palace was forced to deny claims of a row between the two couples last Christmas, when sources claimed that Prince Charles had arranged for Harry and Meghan to stay with William and Kate at the Cambridge's Norfolk residence, Anmer Hall.
