Paul Burrell claims Princess Diana made him pick the ‘C’s off her Chanel bags because she couldn’t bear reminders of Camilla and Charles’ relationship
Royal experts have claimed that Princess Diana was haunted by Camilla's relationship with her husband in the Channel 5 documentary Royals at War
PRINCESS Diana asked her butler to pick the 'C's off her Chanel handbags because she couldn't cope with the reminders of Prince Charles and Camilla's relationship, a new documentary has revealed.
Appearing on Channel 5's Royals At War, Princess Diana's former butler Paul Burrell claimed that the late Royal asked him to cull her designer wardrobe of intertwining 'C's as her marriage started to break down.
But according to royal experts, the popular design first started to become a problem for Diana during her honeymoon with Prince Charles in 1981.
Despite Charles' best efforts to convince his wife that his relationship with Camilla was long over, a pair of cuff links his ex-girlfriend had given him continued to haunt Diana.
Royal journalist and author Penny Junor said: "Charles did not show huge emotional intelligence, if I'm brutally honest.
"He had some cuff links that Camilla had given him with two C's entwined...he wore those on the honeymoon."
She added: "Charles is very black and white in some ways and he had told Diana, 'yes Camilla had been a good girlfriend' but the minute he started dating Diana it was finished. That was that."
When the couple's relationship was rocked by claims suggesting Charles had cheated on Diana with Camilla years later, the late Princess asked her dear friend and butler Paul Burrell to get rid of any reminders of their relationship.
Paul claimed: "She made me pick off all the C's off her Chanel shoes and the Chanel handbags because she couldn't bear to see two C's entwined."
Although Charles and Camilla first dated back in 1971, the couple split when the prince joined the Royal Navy.
Camilla married Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973, with the couple divorcing in 1995, a year before Charles and Diana's split.
In a 1992 tell-all documentary which was supposed to repair his image in the wake of his split from the "people's princess", Princes Charles admitted that he had cheated on Diana with Camilla - but insisted it was only after the marriage had "irretrievably broken down".
Appearing to confirm the infidelity rumours, Charles insisted: "Mrs Parker Bowels is a great friend of mine."
And when asked directly if he had been "faithful and honourable" to his wife throughout their 15-year marriage, Charles replied: "Yes, until it became irretrievably broken down, us both having tried."
Royals At War airs on Channel 5 on Saturday at 9:50pm.
