Mum shares genius trick for reviving any sad-looking house plants using epsom salt bath

NOT all of us are born with natural green fingers which can make keeping houseplants, one of the age-old trends of decor, a bit of a struggle.

Drooping, dropping leaves and dying without reason, it can be difficult to know what you're doing wrong.

More sun? Less sun? Water? While they may make your home look chic, plants can be an endless cycle of confusion and heartbreak - but one mum has revealed a trick that will have you bringing them back to life.

So don't throw out that dropping aloe vera or sad-looking cactus just yet, as she puts reviving her plant-babies and making them grow again down to one simple ingredient: epsom salt.

The Australian woman shared her genius idea on Facebook, explaining that she gives her plants a bath with the salts to help them perk up again.

Sharing before and after pictures of her big-leafed plant, she wrote: "A few inches of water in the bath with Epsom salts and give the leaves a shower to get dust off and keep it happy.

"I have to use them (Epsom salts) myself and it was always sold out because gardeners use it on their plants - that's what gave me the idea."

She recommends using a 'handful' of the salts in a few inches of water in the bath, and leaving plants soaking overnight if they look like they're really dehydrated and in need of some extra TLC.

And her photo evidence is pretty convincing, showing her once sad and drooping plant with leaves perking up in the air and flourishing following the simple bathing process.

A plant doctor at Crocus explained the hack works due to epsom salts containing magnesium sulfate, a nutrient that our leafy friends need to survive.

But as not every plant that is looking sick is suffering from a magnesium deficiency, so experts have also warned that plant parents should proceed with caution when using the salts.

Speaking to , the plant doctor said: "Epsom salts can be used to treat plants suffering from magnesium deficiency, but the symptoms of a deficiency does not include wilting

"Indoor plants can wilt from both too much or too little water, so if a plant is suffering from drought, sit it in a few inches of water for a few hours - but it can also be killed by too much water."

So to find the best solution for your plant, you should analyse it's symptoms - including whether the soil is wet or dry and the colour of its leaves - before testing out home remedies.
