From looking like a geisha to kids’ TV presenter and ‘PYJAMAS’, what men think about women’s fashion
We find out what our other halves know about style, and what they think about this summer's trickiest trends
WE all know that we dress to impress other women – not men.
But that doesn’t stop them from having often misguided opinions about people’s wardrobes.
A style row erupted last week on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, when Piers Morgan and Richard Arnold commented on co-host Susanna Reid’s leopard-print shirt.
Her outfit was compared to the type worn by Corrie character Liz McDonald. But little do the TV duo know that animal print is one of this season’s biggest trends — and that they are the ones lagging behind the fashion pack.
Which got us thinking — what do our other halves know about style, and what would they think about this summer’s trickiest trends?
We put this to the test by styling Sun reader Yasmin, 26, in six bang on-trend looks, and asking her boyfriend Joseph, 30, if he liked the fashion-forward outfits.
Accountant Joseph, who lives in Hemel Hampstead, Herts, with marketing co-ordinator Yasmin, said: “Yasmin is definitely more stylish than me — I really don’t know much about fashion. She wears quite dark colours though, so it would be great to see her in something brighter.”
Yasmin said: “I would say I’m a bit of a tomboy. I tend to wear a lot of T-shirts with jeans, boots or trainers, so I’m looking forward to trying out new trends and getting a bit of inspiration.”
Co-ords
Yasmin (left):
- Lilac shirt £12 from Primark —
- Trousers, 13 from
- Black shoes, £48 from Head Over Heels at Dune London —
Joseph (right):
- Shirt, £25 from
- Jeans, £29.99 from New Look —
- Shoes, £22.99 from New Look —
JOSEPH SAID: “This is interesting, she looks a bit like a geisha. I wouldn’t expect her to wear anything like this. I can’t believe these aren’t pyjamas.
"Yas looks nice in the bright colour, but I would think she’d just rolled out of bed.”
YASMIN SAID: “Joe definitely doesn’t understand style. This set is so comfortable. I would definitely wear it – but I’d make it more casual for everyday wear by teaming the top with a pair of jeans.”
Leopard print
- Leopard print dress, £3 from Asos —
- Black shoes, £72 from Office —
JOSEPH SAID: “I’m not really feeling the leopard print. I’m not surprised Piers Morgan commented on it – it’s quite loud and out there. But maybe he was just intimidated by it too, it’s quite a strong look.”
YASMIN SAID: “There’s nothing wrong with a bold style statement. I really like this print. It’s not something I would usually go for, but I feel that with a bright-red lip this would be a great dress to go out for dinner in.”
Eighties
- T-shirt, £6.50 from Marks & Spencer —
- Jeans, £25.00 from
- Trainers, £85 from
JOSEPH SAID: “I’m sure this is a trendy look but I’m not very trendy, so to me it looks like something a kids’ TV presenter would wear.”
YASMIN SAID: “This is quite a young, fun look – I’m not surprised that Joe doesn’t get it. I really like the trainers and would definitely buy these. They’re a fun way to brighten up an outfit.”
Tie-dye
- Tie dye top, £17.99 from New Look —
- Skirt, £25.99 from
- Shoes, £69 from
JOSEPH SAID: “I mean, it looks like it needs a good wash. I really thought that this look died in the 1960s. It’s a bit too flower-power for me.”
YASMIN SAID: “Now this is a throwback. I probably wouldn’t wear the prints together, but one or the other to channel my inner hippie.”
Boilersuit
- Boilersuit, £49 from Asos —
- Tan shoes, £69 from
JOSEPH SAID: “I’m confused. It looks like she’s wearing an art teacher’s overalls, crossed with the astronaut all-in-one that Bruce Willis wore in Armageddon. I can’t say I’m a fan.”
YASMIN SAID: “I definitely look better in this than Bruce Willis, and boilersuits are actually everywhere when I’ve been shopping. I think this looks cool. I could wear this with heels for an evening out, or with trainers for a daytime look.
Neon
- Dress, £35 from Boohoo —
JOSEPH SAID: “Well, she’ll certainly stand out in this. I do like the style of the dress and Yasmin looks amazing in it, but I think the colour is a bit much. At least I wouldn’t lose her in a crowd.”
YASMIN SAID: “The colour is a bit out there for me but I quite like it. I would wear this on a night out – I love the style of the dress.”

Verdict
YASMIN SAID: “This has definitely opened my eyes to adding different looks to my wardrobe - I would have never thought of trying on a boilersuit but I actually really liked it.
“I would wear these pieces regardless of whether Joe liked them or not, I just don’t think men have a clue about what we wear most of the time, or about what’s in fashion.”
JOSEPH SAID: “I said at the start that I’m definitely no expert on fashion, however some of these trends were a bit too out there for me.
“Yasmin still looked gorgeous in every one, and if she’s happy wearing them, then I’d be proud to have such a stylish girlfriend.”
