PRINCE William treated Kate Middleton "like a servant rather that his girlfriend" during the early days of their relationship, a royal author has claimed.
In his 2011 biography William and Catherine, Andrew Morton looks back at the couple's relationship from when they first met as students at the University of St Andrews in 2001.
Describing the Prince's "curt" behaviour with his girlfriend, the biographer claims William was an "obstinate and strong-willed" boyfriend.
He wrote: "William could be an overwhelming presence at times, Kate felt taken for granted - treated like a servant rather than a girlfriend."
Giving an insight into the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's relationship, their university friend Michael Choong added: "He could be flip and curt with her.
"She didn't like it when he ignored her and got into conversation with someone as though she wasn't there.
"He expected Kate to run after him and the longer they knew each other, the more he seemed to keep her on a tight leash."
Describing their "edgy relationship", another anonymous friend said: "They were always in an out out."
The biographer also claimed that "there were often spats, rows and break-ups" during the couple's university days as they "tried to find their way as young adults".
Two years after they graduated, the couple agreed to a "trial separation" because William "wanted space" from the relationship according to royal expert Katie Nicholl.
In Nicholl's book, William and Harry, the author writes that Kate was "hurt deeply" when Prince William secretly visited the "exquisite-looking" socialite Isabella Calthorpe during their separation.
However, the British socialite reportedly "had no aspirations to date a prince despite his amorous advances" and William rekindled his romance with Kate shortly after.
