MOST people dig out their hair straighteners to style their locks and then store them away again for the next use.

But did you know that if you don’t wash them every three months they could be caking your hair in months’ worth of bacteria and dirt?

A GHD spokesperson said ceramic plates of straighteners can harbour grime if not properly cleaned.

Hairspray and oils can build up on the device, as well as oils that are secreted from your own scalp, which can damage your locks if the device is not regularly cleansed.

The spokesperson told Fabulous Digital: "Our normal advice is with your styler turned off and unplugged, use nail varnish remover on organic cotton wool to wipe down the styler plates and body.

"The cotton wool should be damp but not dripping. You may need to rub hard depending upon how dirty your styler is.

Make sure your straighteners are swtiched off and not plugged in or scorching hot before attempting to clean

"Allow to dry for a couple of hours before plugging in and using and only do so when it is dry.

"You should never use water or water based cleaners to clean your styler – this is a very dangerous practice.

"Do not recommend wipes unless they are organic and biodegradable since they typically contain plastic."

And when was the last time you washed your hairbrush?

The same concept applies to your brushes, which should be regularly cleansed to prevent product and oils being transferred back onto your locks.

HOW SHOULD YOU CLEAN YOUR GHDS?

Moe Harb, a stylist at Moe Harb London in Harrods, advised you clean straighteners when they are warm but not hot, so products can slide off easily.

Make sure the straighteners are unplugged before any cleaning procedures and ensure you won't burn your fingers.

Do not scour as this can remove the coating on the plate.

Soak a towel in water so it's damp and not dripping wet, and then gently rub over the ceramic plates.

Pat dry with a towel or tissue.

You can also use a facewipe to clean your straighteners.
