Meghan Markle writes about ‘life-changing joy’ of adopting a pet and rescuing dogs for animal charity

AS well as being a keen foodie and fashionista, the one thing Meghan Markle always used to document on both her Instagram and blog was her love of dogs.

Before the Duchess of Sussex deactivated her personal social media accounts and shut down her blog The Tig, the former Suits actress regularly shared photos of her adorable rescue dogs Bogart and Guy.

Although the Duchess had to say a heartbreaking goodbye to Bogart when she moved to the UK as he was too old to make the journey, the Duchess brought her beagle Guy over with her.

And shortly after Meghan moved into Kensington Palace with Prince Harry, the newly-engaged couple added an adorable black Labrador  to the family.

Now the new mum has opened up about the "life-changing joy" of adopting a pet in a heartwarming foreward she has written for an animal charity.

Along with Smart Works and The National Theatre in London, Meghan is also a patronage for animal welfare charity Mayhew.

The London-based charity supports pet owners who are going through a turbulent time in their lives and also helps homeless people care for their pet dogs.

Discussing the charity's important work in their annual review, the Duchess wrote: "As a proud dog rescue owner, I know from personal experience the joy that adopting an animal into your home can bring.

"The role that we, as people, play in rehoming and rescuing these animals is vital - but the role of organisations such as Mayhew is unparalleled."

The Duchess also praised the charity's preventative initiatives to stop animals "ending up in shelters in the first place" and how they "actively seek solutions that allow people to stay with their animals and have the support to do so."

Urging animal lovers to do their bit, Meghan added: "As a Patron of Mayhew, I encourage you to get involved in whatever way you can - through pet adoption, volunteering, donation or spreading the word.

"We are interconnected and through these animals we find an even greater link to community and the part we play."
