Bridesmaids reveal the bonkers reasons Bridezillas sacked them from the big day
THERE is a saying “always the bridesmaid, never the bride”. But for these poor women it is a case of “never the bridesmaid”. All four of them have been “sacked” from the role by the brides-to-be.
From weight trolls to ghosting besties, here they tell BELLA BATTLE about the bonkers reasons their bridezilla mates saw wed and gave them the boot before their big day.
From refusing to dye their hair to not losing enough weight, four women reveal why they were given the boot
Charlotte, 20 - was ghosted
FORENSIC science student Charlotte Price, from Wellingborough, Northants, was the victim of “bridesmaid ghosting”. Due to take up the role last month, she then got asked to turn in her posy. She says:
'I met Jenny* in 2015 at a workshop for online content creators and we just hit it off. When she asked me to be her bridesmaid on New Year’s Eve 2017, I instantly said “yes”. I had never been one before. Jenny knew I was starting at Lincoln University but I promised to call her every week – and make the two-hour trip home every couple of weeks for my bridesmaid duties.
When she tasked me with ringing suppliers or working up ideas for her, I put my uni work on hold to help. I kept asking what she wanted for her hen party and was all set to plan it. Then seven months ago, in November 2018, I noticed she wasn’t returning my calls, texts or emails. There were weekends I couldn’t make it home but I kept her updated. By January, I started to feel like I was doing all the running.
Then in March I was shocked to see her hen party pictures on Instagram. Not only hadn’t I organised it, I hadn’t even been invited. I’d had no clue it was even happening. I felt sick as I realised I had been bridesmaid ghosted. The next day, Jenny finally called me back to say my bridesmaid services were no longer required.
She said my university course was interfering with her wedding plans, that we’d grown apart and I wasn’t doing a good enough job. She said I could still come to the wedding – but I didn’t. We haven’t spoken since and I feel like I was sacked as a friend, too. I had become, quite simply, bridesmaid roadkill.'
Claire, 28 - dumped twice
HOTEL accounts clerk Claire Staeton-Foster from St Mawes, Cornwall, has been sacked as a bridesmaid TWICE – once for being slim and the other time for refusing to dye her blonde hair brown. She says:
'Katie* and I grew up together and, aged ten, made a pact to one day be one another’s bridesmaids. I was 22 and a holiday rep in Ibiza when she rang me in January 2013 and asked me to be her bridesmaid. Katie is a size 18 and knew me as a size 16 but I’d lost weight on my year abroad and was now a size 12.
The first thing I did when I got home in March was meet Katie and the two other bridesmaids in Exeter to go dress-shopping. Both girls were also plus-size and Katie had chosen dresses without a waistline and flowy sleeves. Meanwhile, her wedding dress was tight-fitting and corseted. I was proud of my weight loss but instead of congratulating me, Katie looked mortified.
The next day she told me I couldn’t be a bridesmaid as she did not want my skinny frame making her look large. She said she would never have asked me if I’d been upfront about the weight loss. I felt devastated an old friend would judge me for something I felt so proud of. Then, in October 2018, Gemma*, who I met working in Ibiza, asked me to be her bridesmaid.
I spent three months helping her plan the wedding. Then she told me I needed to dye my hair brown – she wanted to be the only blonde. She said a wig wouldn’t look real enough – and hen I told her I couldn’t do brown hair, she called my bluff and replaced me as a bridesmaid. She got married in March this year and I didn’t go. I didn’t want to be accused of ruining her Instagram photo symmetry with my blonde hair.'
Cassie, 36 - pregnancy led to ban
WELLNESS coach Cassie Radford was sacked as a bridesmaid because she was pregnant. The mum-of-three from Newton Abbot, Devon, was axed in case she went into labour . . . at five months. She says:
'Sally* and I met at university while studying childcare and we became firm friends. When I married for the first time, she complained the bridesmaids’ dresses clashed with her red hair, so I changed my colour scheme for her. Then when Sally got engaged in 2011 and asked me to be a bridesmaid, I was ecstatic. But within three months I discovered I was pregnant.
I told her in January 2012 and she said she was thrilled. Then in March, two months from her wedding, I was summoned for a bride-to-bridesmaid catch-up lunch.
I thought we’d be talking about flowers and place-settings but instead Sally was ditching me. She claimed to be worried about the “extra expense” I’d incur altering my dress because I was having twins.
She said the bridesmaid duties would tire me and I might go into labour while walking up the aisle, and throw her wedding into disarray. But I was only going to be five months pregnant at her wedding. I was devastated and shocked that I was being dumped for being pregnant. I wish she’d just said she didn’t want a fat, pregnant woman spoiling her wedding photos. I was replaced with a super-skinny bridesmaid and handed in my dress.
I was too upset to go to the wedding. I sent her a gift and wanted us to remain friends. But she didn’t contact me when the twins, William and Megan, were born. We’ve not spoken since. I can’t forgive her for making me feel like the kid with no friends at school.'
Gbemi, 24 - sacked for not slimming
STUDENT nurse Gbemi Nadi from Marlow, Bucks, was thrilled when her best friend asked her to be a bridesmaid in 2016 – until the bride-to-be demanded she lose weight or face the chop. She says:
'Carrie* was my best mate at school from the age of five. So I was thrilled to be asked to be part of her big day. I was told I’d be one of five bridesmaids and that we would all be wearing baby pink.
A month later, all five of us gathered at her house for the bridesmaid dress reveal. She pulled out a sleeveless, tight-fitting, pink sheath dress. Even worse, it was floor-length and had a low-cut top.
The other girls were a size eight or ten and loved it. But I was horrified. As a big-boobed size 24, I’d look like a sausage squashed in a tiny casing. Carrie brushed away my concerns and told me I could lose weight. She said best friends can tell each other when somebody is overweight and needs to get healthy. I knew that even if I lost half a stone I would still look ridiculous – and I hated the thought of being bullied into it.
We had a huge argument. I told her it was shameful she didn’t respect the fact I was plus-size and proud. After all, I didn’t judge her for being slim. I refused to go on a crash diet to please her and we didn’t speak for eight months. But I went to the wedding – I put my own humiliation behind me to see my best friend walk up the aisle.
We’re not as close as we used to be and she still tells me she thinks I should have lost the weight. Since then I’ve dropped to a size 18 but I did so on my terms. I’m on my feet all day as a student nurse and am eating more healthily, too. I’m just proud I did it for me rather than my bridezilla bestie.'
