How to tell if YOUR date is a secret millionaire like Love Island’s Stevie – from wearing a signet ring to waiters knowing his name
LOVE Island fans were left baffled when Casa Amor’s Stevie Bradley was revealed to be a secret millionaire despite not having mentioned it on the show.
And according to our etiquette expert, hiding your wealth from your date is not uncommon, so could you be dating an heir to a family fortune, or an undercover tycoon.
Speaking to Fabulous Digital, William Hanson has revealed the surprising signs that could mean that your man is in the money.
From being coy about where he went to school to pre-paying the bill, here William reveals how to tell if you’re dating a millionaire like Stevie.
1. THEY DON’T MENTION IT
First and foremost, if you’re date is uber rich it is unlikely that he will mention it.
If they are dropping it into conversation or making it quite obvious then they probably don’t have that much money in the grand scheme of things.
These people would probably be what we would call high net worth rather than ultra-high net worth.
Generally as a rule, the more fuss they make the less money they probably have.
2. THEY SEEM AT HOME IN HIGH-END ENVIRONMENTS
If you go somewhere fairly grand and they start staring at the chandeliers and commenting on how lovely the china is, it shows that they’re not used to that environment.
It’s the same concept as people taking pictures of their food, they do it because it’s a novelty.
If they act as if they are just walking down the high street when they take you into The Ritz then it’s a safe bet that this is not out of the ordinary to them.
3. THEY’RE NOT FLASHY
Dating a millionaire you might expect to be treated to bottles of Moet and see your date flashing designer labels, but this often isn’t the case.
For them the real definition of luxury is not, “it’s got a shiny floor” so where they would take you won’t necessarily be The Ritz.
They won’t pick the most expensive food and the most expensive bottle of wine.
If they are picking up the bill they are likely to say order whatever you like but they won’t spell it out.
The unspoken rule is if it’s their turn to pay, have what you like.
4. THEY DRESS DOWN
Don’t expect everything they wear to be tailored or bespoke.
They might dress from high street stores, a Uniqlo pair of jeans, a Zara shirt, just because they’ve got a lot of money doesn’t mean that everything is going to be couture.
A good way to tell if they are wealthy is to look for an expensive watch and the shoes. These are fairly old fashioned barometers but I think they do still count.
5. THEY HAVE EXCEPTIONAL MANNERS
The well-heeled will treat people beautifully normally, especially staff, if they’ve grown up with staff.
Keep an eye out in restaurants – they are likely to be almost overly nice to the waiting staff.
6. THEY WILL KEEP QUIET ABOUT THEIR SCHOOLING
The wealthy, especially in Britain, tend not to mention brand names and will skirt around the issue and the same goes for their education.
If they went to school in Eton for example they won’t come out and say it. They will say “I went to school just outside of Slough” and they play it down.
If you’ve gone to a good school you’re not supposed to shout about it.
7. THEY WILL FIT RIGHT IN
They won’t expect everything to be super high-end.
People with a lot of money aren’t glamorous in a down-played environment; as long as it’s functional they’re fairly gung-ho.
The wealthy quite like a slightly bucolic, down to earth environment not everything needs to be flashy and wonderful all the time.
8. THEY WEAR A SIGNET RING WITH A CREST ON IT
Signet rings seem to be much more popular now than they used to be.
A signet ring generally is an indicator that someone has come from a well-heeled background.
If it’s got a crest on it, it means it inherited. But if it’s initials it’s awful and they’ve had it bought and are older than the ring itself.
9. THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THINGS COST
If they have ample funds then they won’t be aware how much basic things cost.
STEVIE'S FAMILY FORTUNE
The uni student, who has caught the eye of Lucie Donlan in Casa Amor, comes from a wealthy family who he lives with on the Isle Of Man.
According to the , his dad Stephen Bradley has made his millions from a retail and property empire – and is so impressive that he was awarded an MBE for his services the retail industry.
Stevie, 21, appears to have reaped the benefits from his dad’s money as he drives a Porsche, which he regularly shows off on Instagram.
He attended a £23,000-per-year private school on the affluent island before heading to university.
His social media shows he has enjoyed the high life over the years – with champagne fuelled parties and trip to the exclusive Sandy Lane hotel in Barbados, favoured by the likes of Simon Cowell.
If they don’t know how much a pint of milk is even a Duchy original pint, then that’s probably an indication that you don’t need to worry about those sorts of things.
10. THEY PRE-PAY THE BILL
To avoid any monetary interaction in front of a date, they might pre-pay the bill before you even arrive at the restaurant.
If they are really posh they might even have an account at the restaurant, but they are likely to avoid having money exchanges at the table.
11. THEY ARE CALLED BY NAME
If they are greeted by their name by staff at a restaurant that is a very good indicator that they come from money.
They are obviously a regular at said restaurant, and if it is fancy they can clearly afford to go their often.
However, if they know their name in Nandos it’s not quite the same thing.
Previously, William Hanson revealed the nine kitchen cupboard items that make you posh including no-bits marmalade and square plates.
And we revealed the 16 items, from a smart TV to a barbecue that you must own to be counted as "posh."
