‘Tacky’ bride and groom made guests pay £40 each for their own meal – sparking debate over whether you should get married if you can’t afford wedding
WEDDING guests often expect to be entirely catered for when they are invited to celebrate a bride and groom's big day.
But one woman was left fuming at having to pay £40 for her own meal at a reception because the newlyweds were low on funds.
In a post on a wedding shaming group, she explained how the couple - who she shared some pictures of - opted for a cheaper wedding and invited just 40 people.
"They didn't have the money to have a big wedding. (I totally get that.)," the woman wrote.
"They decided to have it in a small restaurant space for 40 guests with just family and a few close friends. "They would have a bigger bbq reception later in the year for anyone who want to celebrate with them. (I get it and I'm on board.)
"What I'm not about it is each of their guests had to pay $50 a plate for their own meal."
Many members rushed to suggest that if the couple couldn't afford to pay for their guests' food, they shouldn't have got married - or had a wedding on an even smaller scale.
One person wrote: "If you can't afford even 40 people, just get married at city hall.
"Or have whatever amount you can pay for and dot that...don't ask guests to pay for their own food. Gripes sake."
Another commented: "I wouldn't go to my own sister's wedding if she told me she was charging. WTF is wrong with these people?"
A third shared: "Charging your guests is tacky and rude."
And a fourth added: "I think if you can't afford to feed 40 people you only invite the number you can afford.
"If you can't afford to feed anyone, just have the ceremony and invite those same people to the BBQ you're having later."
Another person was more on the fence, writing: "I’m fine with paying for my own meal but why is the meal $50?"
And others suggested it was acceptable if that was the only thing they were shelling out on for the couple.
One person wrote: "If no gift is expected, it's fine."
Another commented: "I don't have a problem paying for food... My brother did it in lieu of gifts for his wedding and it was great."
