The Queen’s VERY cheeky sense of humour revealed after she corrected a French royal’s ‘penis’ comment

THE younger royals may be known for their love of jokes – but the Queen can certainly hold her own when it comes to her cheeky sense of humour.

This was perfectly demonstrated when Her Majesty was once entertaining General de Gaulle – the former French president - and his wife.

According to Adam Helliker, author of a forthcoming book on the Royal Family, there was a spot of awkward conversation had between the monarch and her guests at Buckingham Palace.

He told Fabulous Digital: “A guest asked Madame de Gaulle what she was most looking forward to in her retirement, which was imminent.

“With great elaboration (as she didn't speak much English) she replied: ‘A penis.’

“An awkward silence ensued for some time, until the Queen herself came to the rescue, and she said with a broad grin: ‘Ah, happiness.’”

The comical anecdote from the French State Visit is said to be one of Prince Philip’s favourite stories of all time.

The Queen and Prince Philip have been married for 72 years, and their success is thought to be down to their shared sense of humour which sees them laugh, joke and make witty comments.

Throughout the years, the Duke of Edinburgh has played many practical jokes on his Royal wife - and while many generated a good laugh, others seriously backfired.

According to one Royal insider, the Prince once hid one of the Queen's beloved pet corgis in a bid to get dinner guests laughing.

They told the : "Philip had a corgi put in a desk cupboard and when the Queen asked him where it was, he said that he didn't know."

But his plan totally backfired when the hidden dog started crying for help on hearing his owner the Queen's voice in the room.

The source continued: "When the dog whined after hearing the Queen's voice, Philip let it out and it ran straight to her."

While he may of thought it hilarious, Elizabeth was not impressed and scolded Philip, telling him to 'stop showing off' in front of their dinner guests.

But even this didn't deter the Duke, who instead of listening to his wife turned to guests, according to the source, and scoffed 'who does she think she is?'.

On their 70th wedding anniversary, Royal biographer Ingrid Seward explained to Loose Women: "I think the secret is they laugh together. I think the Queen is the [comedian].

"She's a wonderful mimic. She can do the Liverpool accent, she does Irish - she's very good at American as well."

In other Royal news, the Queen was reunited with the naughty Shetland pony who once ate her flowers.

And here you can take a look inside the £115m Balmoral Castle where the Queen spends her holidays.
