Meghan Markle broke down in tears when she watched Princess Diana’s funeral on TV and wanted to be ‘Diana 2.0’ claims royal biographer
MEGHAN Markle is said to have broken down in tears when she watched Princess Diana’s funeral on TV back in 1997.
According to royal biographer Andrew Morton, the Duchess of Sussex - who was around 16 at the time - was extremely moved as she watched Diana’s coffin travelling through the streets.
Millions tuned in to watch the heartbreaking ceremony which saw Meghan’s future husband, Prince Harry, and Prince William, walk behind the carriage.
In his book , Diana's former biographer Andrew said Meghan and her friends were “devastated” by the death.
He said "tears coursed down their cheeks" when an envelope with the word “mummy” was placed next to the coffin.
The poignant message was penned by Prince Harry, who was just 12 at the time.
Following Diana’s death, Meghan and her pals reportedly used to watch videos of Prince Charles and Diana’s high-profile wedding in 1981.
She is said to have become captivated by Diana and even had a copy of Andrew’s Diana biography on her shelf.
Andrew wrote in his Meghan book: “As friend Ninaki Priddy observed: 'She was always fascinated by the royal family. She wanted to be Diana 2.0.'"
Following in Diana’s footsteps, Meghan and her friends started collecting toys and clothes for poor children in their area.
Little did she know that Diana would later have become her mother-in-law.
Meghan Markle is expected to be making her first visit to Diana’s grave, in order to feel more connected to her mum-in-law.
Harry has previously revealed he believes his mum would have approved of Meghan, even saying the pair would have been “best friends”.
And whether it's through their Instagram account or humanitarian work, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle often pay tribute to Princess Diana in a number of public ways.
Meghan and Harry paid touching tribute to Diana on their Sussex Royal Instagram account earlier this month.
It now appears the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have incorporated Diana's memory into their home by keeping a framed photo of Archie's late grandmother in his nursery.
