From ‘bubbly’ to ‘avo’, etiquette expert reveals the 10 words that make you ‘middle class’
IF you’ve ever drank a glass of bubbly while complaining about avo-eating kids at uni – turns out you’re 'middle class'.
An etiquette expert has revealed the list of words and phrases which supposedly make you posh if you use them.
William Hanson, an etiquette expert and coach, said you can easily tell someone's ‘class’ from the language and vocabulary they use.
Sharing his list with , he revealed abbreviations feature highly among his 13 tell-tale words.
Among them is ‘uni’ for university, and ‘avo’ for avocado - the fruit of choice among millennials.
But some of them seem fairly familiar, including ‘kids’, ‘toilet’ and 'booze'

- Uni
- Booze
- "I’m done"
- Catchment area
- Fitbit
- Vegan
Although some words are more niche, including ‘catchment area’ and ‘fitbit’.
And it turns out Americanisms which have crept into our everyday language, including ‘movie’ and ‘I’m done’, would also make us 'middle class'.
Trendy meat-free diet 'vegan' has also made it onto the list, along with 'fizz' or 'bubbly' to mean either prosecco or champagne.
Classic greeting including 'pleased to meet you', and 'pardon', have also been deemed 'middle class' by William.
