From croffles and crodoughs to a burrito made of SUSHI – food fans are going mad for these crazy culinary combos

FOOD fusions are supposed to offer the best of both worlds – but some dishes are turning stomachs rather than heads.

The most popular of the hybrids is the cronut – half croissant and half donut – but it has opened the door to other, less desirable, mash-ups including ramen burgers – beef patties wedged between noodles.

Tesco is taking a stab at the trend, launching hot cross scones for Easter.

But how tasty are these food combos?

From sushi burritos to waffle burgers, Hayley Minn gives scores out of five to some of the hybrids that could be coming to a restaurant near you.

Hot cross scones - Tesco Finest, two-pack, £1

THE supermarket giant claims to have combined two of Britain’s classics – the hot cross bun and scone.

However, Tesco’s creation simply tastes like the former while taking the shape of the latter minus that crumbly, dense texture.

That’s not taking away from the taste, though, as fans of hot cross buns and scones will still find these delicious.

Crodough - £2-£3 each, Rinkoff Bakery

CRODOUGH is the UK’s answer to Cronuts, which were created (and patented) by Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York.

London-based Rinkoff fries croissant pastry like a doughnut to give it extra height and a layered effect, then fills it with flavours, such as peanut butter and jelly.

Nice idea but I found mine to be quite dry.

Sushi burrito - £7.50, SushiDog

SUSHI burritos are basically giant sushi rolls you can eat out of the paper, like a burrito.

The London restaurant offers six flavours, including vegan teriyaki “chicken”, but I tried the signature salmon and chicken katsu.

They were tasty and fresh, but could have done with a little more spice considering they take inspiration from Mexican food.

Waffle burger - £10-£14, Bird

TO the American who decided to put fried chicken in between two waffles, you are a genius.

You can find versions of this hybrid all around the world, but I went to Bird in the capital, where I tried its pink-coloured original waffle burger.

Chicken thighs covered in maple syrup, cheese and barbecue sauce should not work, but it really does.

Avo bun burger -£15, Avobar

SWAPPING burger buns for an avocado seems like a healthy alternative for those on gluten-free diets, but it is ridiculously hard to eat.

Avobar is just one of many restaurants offering an avo bun burger, and it fills its signature dish with a sweet potato and lentil patty.

Sadly, it was not worth the £15 price.

S’mores croffle - £7.25-7.75, EL&N

THE “Instagrammable” pink cafe with locations across the globe has invented the tastiest dessert ever by mixing croissant, waffle and the marshmallow and choc treat S’mores.

It is even served on a stick for messy eaters and those on the go.
