Greggs could be about to start selling sushi… and people are not happy about it

Britain's biggest baker is planning to expand its menu to include healthier foods such as the Japanese classic, and it's fair to say that people are quite taken aback

THEY may be best known for their steak bakes and sausage rolls, but Greggs is starting to look east for culinary inspiration – and the high-street bakers may soon start selling sushi.

The sausage roll specialist also wants to increase the amount of salads and yogurts on offer as demand for their healthier options soars.

Greggs Chief Executive Roger Whiteside said: “We accept that the trend is moving away from over indulging in things like doughnuts and sausage rolls.

“We have our base, our identity if you like, but the key is to offer a variety of food that everyone can afford.”

But some confused customers weren’t so certain that the shift to sushi – and away from bakery classics – was such a good thing.

One woman took to Twitter to say: “Word of warning Greggs, replace the sausage and bean pasty with sushi and I will not be responsible for my actions.”

One disgruntled Twitter user said the move was “heresy”, whilst another joked: “Greggs sushi. One prawn baguette and a steak bake maki roll please guv’nor.”

And even sushi fans aren’t best pleased, with one woman tweeting: “I like sushi and I like greggs and never the twain shall meet.”

The high-street giant’s health kick may also soon see more vegetarian and gluten-free options make their way on to the menu, as well as a possible foray into Mexican food.

And Greggs is looking to expand its presence as well as its menu, with 70 new stores and 1,000 new jobs in the pipeline for the popular bakers.

The firm’s Chief Executive added: “We will always be a bakery and sausage rolls will always be part of that, but we’re trying to leverage that with demand for healthier options.”
