The couple successfully married away from prying eyes and, because her new husband had recently divorced, secrecy was particularly important to the pair.

In the years following their marriage Audrey had two miscarriages, then when she eventually gave birth to a baby boy she wrote to Sir Felix to share her joy.

She penned: "Sean is truly a dream, and I find it hard to believe he is ours to keep. I long to show him to you."

Katherine Schofield, head of entertainment memorabilia, said: "What is so interesting about them is that they cover the period of her life where she went from being an unknown to a global superstar.

"They're incredibly personal and she hints at what she's doing career-wise but they're more about her emotions, and her gratitude towards Sir Felix Aylmer."
