After Nice attack and Turkey chaos, how does YOUR summer destination fare on holiday terror map?

BRITONS planning a holiday in Europe have been warned of a “high" threat of terrorism after deadly terrorist attacks in Nice and the ongoing coup in Turkey.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued travel warnings and advice to specific regions for Brits after the Turkish military launched a coup against the government Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and string of Islamic terrorist attacks in France.

These are the holiday destinations the government classifies as "high-risk":

Turkey

Around 2.5million Brits visit the country each year and it is the latest destination popular with UK holidaymakers to be hit by instability after an attempt to overthrow the government by the army and terror attacks carried out by both ISIS and Kurdish separatists.

In the wake of recent political instability, official advice is to avoid all but essential travel to the region for the coming days, but tour operator Thomas Cook has said it believes southern Turkish holiday resorts to be unaffected.

Outgoing flights to Turkey have been suspended until the political picture becomes clearer.

In general, the  FCO’s travel advice to Turkey remains serious, telling Brits in the area to follow the advice of local security forces.

It warns "attacks could be indiscriminate and could affect places visited by foreigners" and holidaymakers are advised to "exercise caution".

They also advises against all travel to within the border with Syria.

Egypt

The terror threat is also high in Egypt, after the Russian plane crash which killed all 224 people on board plummeted into the desert in Sinai.

Since then, UK carriers refused to take passengers directly to Sharm el-Sheikh airport and the FCO is advising to dodge the popular sun favourite altogether.

The FCO also advises against all travel to North Sinai as it believes that terrorists continue to plan attacks.

Tunisia

Tunisia joins the high risk status with the government advising against travelling to the country for the foreseeable future.

Last June 38 people were killed - including 30 Brits - when a gunman attacked a hotel in the popular beach resort of Sousse.

A spokesman for the FCO said: “Since the attack in Sousse, we have been working closely with the Tunisian authorities to investigate the attack and the wider threat from terrorist groups in Tunisia.

“Although we have had good co-operation from the Tunisian government, including putting in place additional security measures, the intelligence and threat picture has developed considerably, reinforcing our view that a further terrorist attack is highly likely.

“On balance, we do not believe the mitigation measures in place provide adequate protection for British tourists in Tunisia at the present time.”

Morocco

Around 500,000 British nationals visit Morocco every year and the government says there is a high threat of terrorism due to the growing number of locals belonging to ISIS.

France

France is classed as highly at risk from terrorism due to a string of terrorist attacks – the most recent being an attack by a lone terrorist who killed 84 people with a lorry in Nice on Bastille Day.

It was already at high risk level since the Paris bombings in November of last year, the shootings in January at the Charlie Hebdo offices, a shooting the following day in Montrouge, the shooting and hostage siege at a Jewish supermarket in Paris and an attack against three French soldiers on February 3, 2015.

Spain

The terror threat was put to maximum after Spanish police disrupted a number of groups suspected of recruiting individuals to travel to Syria and Iraq.

Some of them expressed an intention to carry out attacks in Europe.

Israel

The FCO advise against all travel to Gaza, the Sheba'a Farms and Ghajjar along the border with Lebanon and east of the Syrian border.

There are heightened tensions in Israel, brought about by rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel and Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, increase the risk of retaliatory terrorist attacks in Israel.

The FCO advise against all but essential travel to all other parts of Israel within 5km of the Israeli/Lebanese border.

There is a risk of kidnap in Gaza and along the border with Egypt and tourists should be aware that there is a long-standing policy of the British government to deal with hostage takers.

Cyprus, Greece, Croatia

These Brit hot spots are given a “general threat” from terrorism and are seen as the safest holiday destinations on the Med.

But the FCO said there was still a risk of attacks on British nationals from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria.
