The spiny, oval-shaped tropical snack is famed for its fetid smell, which has been compared to the aroma of rotting onions, turpentine and pongy gym clothes.

The scent is so pungent that it is banned on public transport in Singapore and in certain areas of the city.

WHAT IS A DURIAN?

Durians are native to Indonesia, Malaysia, Borneo and a few other Southeast Asian countries.
They are often sold at street markets in cities such as Singapore and Bangkok.
The durian, known as ‘King of Fruits’ in certain parts of the world, usually weighs one to three kilograms and is 30cm long.
The outer layer is covered in thorns while the flesh is highly-prized, it has been compared to a rich custard flavoured with almonds.
The flesh, which gives off the distinctive smell, can be eaten at various stages of ripeness and is used to flavour a variety of sweet and savoury dishes.
The seeds can also be eaten when cooked.
