It doesn't have to mean you have been scarred for life, but most of us will have a few stories we prefer not to tell. To anyone.

Of course, these are exactly the kind of stories we love hearing from our friends, which is why a is so interesting.

It was started by a user who wanted to know the secrets people will take to the grave with them, and it's prompted a tonne of responses.

Many of them are pretty funny, such as the guy who admits dressing in his sister's bikini... but not for the reason you'd think, or the person who still can't get over seeing their mum and step-dad in the throes of passion.

Another user detailed a hideous incident which happened in their youth.

While sledging the user accidentally crashed into a tree which had just been planted in honour of his pal's late grandma... so he stuck the broken trunk back in the snow and pretended it hadn't happened.

Another opened up about their mortifying first kiss.

"When I was a freshman and my stepmom was drinking at the time, she gave me a kiss on the lips (full blown)," the user wrote.

"Me being a little stupid I let myself get carried away and made out with her like a good ten minutes."

One person still can't over letting their friend get into trouble at school when it was actually them who'd cheated on a test, while there were several descriptions of catching sneaky glances at nude friends.

Other offerings were much more serious.

One person admitted telling friends their father had died rather than be honest about him.

"My dad's a National Socialist and he regularly goes to meetings, I was raised on Germanic folklore and the idea  that I'm superior to others because I'm of German descent," Kevinera said.

"I have plenty of Jewish and Slavish friends and I just tell them my dad died when I was younger.

"My dad's a Nazi."

There was also a woman who admitted faking a pregnancy and abortion, explaining her partner was abusive and she can't believe she ever did it.

Several other opened up about upsetting experiences with their parents, with several detailing nights their mum or dad tried to kill themselves.

One poor man detailed the horrific guilt he feels as he believes he caused his mother's death by hiding her medication - she left the house after she couldn't find them and took her own life.

Reddit users were quick to show support to the man, insisting he was so little at the time he had no idea what he was doing.
