See just how different you can look using five popular photo editing apps
One of our selfie-loathing writers trials five different portrait editing apps to see what's she's missing
TRUE fact: I’ve never edited a selfie.
While we’re on the subject, I can probably count the number of selfies I’ve ever taken on two hands.
I’m a rare breed, or at least so it seems when you’re flicking through the flawless faces on Instagram.
In an attempt to discover what I’m missing out on, I downloaded five popular photo editing apps and got trigger happy with the tools on a make-up free me…
Facetune
This selfie-editing app endorsed by Khloe Kardashian is a go-to tool for many celebs.
And here I am after smoothing my skin, applying digital eye make-up, adjusting the lighting and reshaping my face (which leaves me looking like the reflection in a carnival mirror before I get it right).
Somewhere along the way it seems I got a tan, too.
I found it quite fiddly and I ended up feeling insecure about my natural face and wanting to delete the app already (that was £1.99 down the drain…).

PhotoWonder
So this is what I would look like as an anime character.
I enlarged my eyes, changed their colour to blue and brightened them.
I also lightened my skin, applied foundation, blusher, mascara, eyeliner and topped it off with the ‘fresh’ filter.
And all of that left me with a barely-discernible nose.
Visage Lab
Although this one looks like the most subtle transformation, this app probably freaked me out the most.
Without even having to click, the app automatically smoothed my skin, applied skin and eye make-up and whitened my teeth within seconds of uploading my picture.
Is anyone else reminded of the Friends episode where Ross’ teeth glow in the dark?
Perfect365
If I was tagged in this photo on Facebook, I’d detag it before realising it was me.
With just one click, the ‘Audrey’ filter transforms me into an overly airbrushed, too perfect, totally fake version of myself.
And the artificial brows drawn on top of my natural ones make me look like I seriously need to invest in a pair of tweezers.
YouCam Makeup
Ok, the selection of headpieces, jewellery, eye wear and hair colours got the better of me on this one.
With pink hair, cat ears, eyeliner, fake eyelashes, different eye colour, a double eye lid (whatever that is?), eye enlarger and new brows it’s no surprise I look different.
It’s probably not a look I’m going to adopt on a full-time basis though…
So am I a selfie-taking and editing convert in the making?
The short answer is: No.
I’ve always considered being ‘photogenic’ as an insult (who wants to be the girl a guy swipes yes to on Tinder then runs away from on the date?)
I’m happy in my all imperfect glory, thanks.
And now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m just off to declutter my phone from some unnecessary apps…
