This is why you should leave your phone charging on a SAUCER overnight

It's something most of us do without even thinking, but there's a disturbing reason why it's not a good idea

IT'S an everyday part of life for most of us - get ready for bed, set our alarm, plug our phone in to charge and then go to sleep.

But according to , this is one of the worst things you can do.

He appeared on Good Morning Britain to talk about keeping technology safe around the house.

One of his biggest tips was not to leave anything charging for a big length of time - and that includes mobile phones.

Why? They become a fire risk.

"Ideally, also unplug things - people are going to leave their phones on charge overnight, we all do it," he said.

"Don’t leave it on a flammable surface like a pillow, underneath a pillow or on the quilt."

Many people do put their mobiles under their pillow when they drop off to sleep, the thinking being they're more likely to hear their alarm.

But have you ever noticed how hot the battery gets when it's charging?

 

It wouldn't take much for that to cause your bedding to start smouldering - and the rest doesn't bear thinking about.

Luckily, Dominic had some tips to help people stay safe.

"Put it on a saucer that way if gets hot at least the saucer isn’t going to catch alight, it’s going to protect you a little bit," he said.

It's also vital that you use a proper charger when your phone is out of battery.

There's always a temptation to save a bit of money by buying a cheap one online when yours breaks, but it's just not worth the risk.

"Don’t use these substandard chargers - there was a kid in 2007 who died from one, he was seven years old - they are lethal," Dominic said.

There are other reasons not to change your phone overnight too.

We recently told that Brits are wasting around £135 million a year thanks to the practice, because most phones and tablets only take a couple of hours to charge.

If that doesn't get you thinking what about this - you might actually be reducing the life of your phone with all that charging.

That's right, charging for long periods of time can wear out batteries so it's a much better idea to go for short bursts.
