Deliveroo vs UberEats, Just Eat, HungryHouse and Amazon Restaurants: Which is the best takeaway app?
TAKEAWAY food apps are booming – letting you order at the touch of a button.
Amazon launched its one-hour restaurant delivery service this month, rivalling the likes of UberEats, Just Eat, HungryHouse and Deliveroo.
Here, Sun girl JENNY FRANCIS orders a margherita pizza from each firm and gives the service a rating out of five.
ORDERED: 12:56pm.
ARRIVED: 1:11pm – after 15 minutes.
CONDITION: Arrived warm and in good condition.
FEE: Zero.
POSITIVES: The app has a live feed that tells you when your food has been ordered, when it is being prepared, when the courier is on their way and when the food is arriving.
You have the option to contact your driver and the app even has their name and picture.
It also gives you a countdown, in minutes, until they arrive. I received no annoying phone calls from the driver struggling to find me.
NEGATIVES: He did not deliver to me, instead he dropped off my pizza at a loading bay in the office block where I work and left.
I had to track it down from there, which took up time and effort, so there was little face-to-face service.
(Pizza came from Pizza Buzz, £4.95)
ORDERED: 12:59pm.
ARRIVED: 1:20pm – after 21 minutes.
CONDITION: Arrived warm but in good condition.
FEE: £2.50.
POSITIVES: Once the food has been prepared, the app gives you a countdown of how long the driver will be as well as showing their location on a map.
I received no annoying phone calls from the driver trying to find the address.
NEGATIVES: The driver did not deliver to me or call me on arrival.
Instead, he dropped the pizza off at my office’s reception bay and left.
I had to track it down from there, once my app told me it had been delivered.
(Pizza came from Pizza Express, £9.10)
ORDERED: 1:05pm.
ARRIVED: 2:14pm – after 69 minutes.
CONDITION: Arrived warm and in good condition.
FEE: 50p.
POSITIVES: The pizza also arrived with free sauces.
NEGATIVES: This took a long time to arrive and I had a phone call from a lost delivery driver, asking for directions.
The app gave no tracking information, just a broad estimated delivery time.
(Pizza ordered from Basel Pizza, £10.95)
ORDERED: 12:55pm.
ARRIVED: 2pm – after 65 minutes.
CONDITION: The pizza was cold and arrived in a complete mess, all fallen apart in the box and piled up at one end.
FEE: £79 (for a year).
POSITIVES: You get £10 off your first order.
NEGATIVES: The driver called me, unable to find my location.
When I offered him directions, they confused him and, after three minutes on the phone, he agreed to try to find me.
But he struggled and called me again – until eventually finding me. It was very frustrating.
I had entered my address on the app yet he seemed unable to find me for 15 minutes.
The app also offered no tracking service for the order.
(Pizza ordered from My Pixxa, £14)
ORDERED: 1:03pm.
ARRIVED: 2pm, after 57 minutes.
CONDITION: Arrived very hot and in good condition, slightly greasy.
FEE: £2.50.
POSITIVES: Despite an initial phone call, the driver found me with no problems and was friendly.
NEGATIVES: I got a call from the driver at 1:12pm, nine minutes after ordering, questioning the delivery address and with a bit of confusion over how he would find me.
I assured him I would be waiting and he could call me on arrival.
I also got a number of annoying texts from an 88808 number telling me I had subscribed, then unsubscribed, then subscribed again, to the service.
There is no tracking service on this app.
(Pizza ordered from Super Pizza, £9.45)
