Bizarre pregnancy craze allows women who have never had sex to give ‘virgin birth’ to children
For women who have a phobia of sex, this treatment could be life-changing
WOMEN who have never had sex are getting pregnant... and it’s all because of innovative IVF treatment.
In the UK, there have been 25 cases of ‘virgin birth’ over the past five years, doctors revealed to the Mail on Sunday.
With IVF treatment, the reproductive method occurs outside the woman’s body, so sexual contact isn’t necessary.
The NHS explains: “This process of fertilisation happens outside the woman’s body.
“A woman’s eggs are surgically removed and fertilised in a laboratory using sperm that has been given as a sperm sample.
“Next, the fertilised egg, called an embryo, is surgically implanted into the woman's womb.”
While most hopeful parents turn to IVF due to problems with fertility, some women are choosing the method to avoid sexual contact.
There are a number of different reasons why the patients have chosen not to become pregnant the traditional way.
For some, they admitted that they were ready to have a child but hadn’t yet found a suitable partner.
A few of the patients revealed that they had decided to go down the ‘virgin birth’ route because they had a fear of having sex.
It’s not the first surprising IVF news to sweep the web this year.
In August, reports revealed that THREE parents’ DNA could be used to produce a baby.
The new technique would allow genetically modified embryos to contain genetic characteristics from a mum, dad and a female donor.
