Students now get 10% off their food shopping at Morrisons…and yes, beer and wine is included

There are some exclusions including tobacco, spirits and fuel but wine and beer is included in the 10% discount

MORRISONS has become the first major supermarket to offer a student discount in its stores.

In an attempt to help cash-strapped students the high street chain is giving those in higher education 10 per cent off their grocery shopping.

It has teamed up with student discount company UniDays to trial the discount for three months and if it goes well, will consider extending the scheme.

Students will have to sign up for a free UniDays account, download its app and then flash your unique code at the checkout to get the discount. The discount also works in its in-store cafes.

There is no minimum spend to get the discount, but there is a maximum spend of £100 per transaction. The offer also can’t be used online.

As well as getting 10% off on groceries and food at the cafes, you can collect points with its Morrisons Match and More loyalty scheme.

The scheme offers £5 gift vouchers once you reach 5,000 points. You can get 4 points for every £1 spent online and in-store.

Can you get a discount on everything in the store?

Unfortunately there is a long list of items you can’t get with the student discount. Including, but not limited to: fuel, carrier bags, cashback, fireworks, lottery, tobacco and gift vouchers. You can find the whole list on the .

Crucially for students, wine and beer (not spirits) are included along with video games.

Rebecca Singleton, Morrisons director of local solutions, said: “We listened to students and they told us that they’d be more loyal to a supermarket that offered the sort of discounts that they get on rail travel, clothes and eating out.

“So today, we’re launching the trial of a discount on groceries that will help students make their money go further.”

Morrison’s isn’t the first supermarket to offer a student discount.

The Co-operative also offers students 10% off its food and drink (including booze), and you can just flash your NUS card - which everyone can get, student or not.
