When it’s cheaper to fly home than take the train
Jordon Cox, 19, also known as the coupon kid. He writes a blog for .
There are many ways to save money on travel - especially trains, but not that many people are willing to a few thousand extra miles to save money.
He once flew via Berlin as it was cheaper than getting the train home.
“Best in January, I found it was £8 cheaper to fly from Sheffield to Essex via Berlin than it was to take a one-way train,” he told The Sun Online.
He added: “If train prices are high, have a look for flights via European cities including Dublin and Cologne. You’ll save money and sometimes get the time to see another city in the process.”
If you’ve got space then stockpile
Mum of two, Kayleigh Hughes is not a stranger to money saving.
In fact, she writes a blog for every week detailing her crafty ways, including how she forages for food and threw her dream wedding for just £500.
The bargain-mad 29-year-old told The Sun Online that her ultimate top money saving tip is stockpiling.
She said: “From boxes of cereal and washing powder to loo rolls and shower gels, I’ve managed to cut my spending by around 70 per cent just by having my own stockpile.
“My stockpile is in my utility room and is bursting with non-perishable goods that I regularly use.”
She started it two years ago, although sometimes can go weeks without finding anything decent to add to it.
Her top tip for stockpiling is to find items that are reduced to clear or buy using coupons to get them at a fraction of their original price.
She added: “You can stockpile anything from washing powder, washing up liquid, toiletries, pasta and sauces and cereals - anything that you can keep on your shelves that won't go off.
I then keep a list of all of the things I regularly use and tick them off when I know I have plenty in stock.”
Get luxury gifts at rock-bottom prices
Ashleigh Swan started her blog - - in June 2013 after being made redundant.
She has been writing it full time since September 2014 and now has a team of 14 people working on her website with her.
She told The Sun Online: “I love luxury beauty products but with their high price tags I can’t always afford them - or want to pay full price for that matter!
“I found that if you sign up to magazine subscriptions they often give away high value ‘free’ gifts to try and get you to subscribe.
To my surprise I started receiving emails back asking for my address, a few days later coupons would turn up with a thank you letter for my feedback.
Emma Mumford
“It costs a one off £6 payment for a 6 month magazine subscription and you can get some great free gifts for usually at least £50.”
In the past she’s got a tanning lotion set, Benefit make-up products, a haircare bundle and even an electric toothbrush worth £100.
A simple butt effective way to money
The motto on Ricky Willis’ website - - is “every penny counts”.
He started his blog in 2013 when he was fed up of being poor and struggling to make ends meet.
Now he has over 150,000 people reading it each month. His top tip is a simple one that could save every household money.
The 37-year-old said: “Some people think I'm a little tight when I talk about this one but it really works.
“When the kids use the loo they always give the toilet roll a big pull and use more than they need to.
“To stop this, I squeeze the loo roll and it then won't spin properly. This way they then only pull off what they need, instead of pulling loads.
“With the average cost of a branded toilet being between 45p and 55p per roll, this simple tip is a real money saver over time.”
Sometimes it pays to tell companies what you think of them
Emma Mumford, 23, started the page back in September 2013.
She now has over 200,000 people reading her posts about coupons, deals, glitches and bargains everyday.
Emma stumbled upon her top tip by accident. Three years ago she wrote to a company to make a complaint about one of her favourite brands.
To her surprise they sent an apology email and a coupon for the inconvenience and disappointment in the product.
But for Emma this was a real light bulb moment.
She said: “I had just started couponing at this point and thought what if I sent a genuine positive review, how would they react?
“So that day I emailed all my favourite brands and gave honest feedback about how much I loved their products and how I have used them.
“To my surprise I started receiving emails back asking for my address, a few days later coupons would turn up with a thank you letter for my feedback.
“The best one I’ve received was £30 from Dettol.”
Buy your food from a bargain shop
Holly Smith, who claims she is the UK’s most trusted female money saving expert, has over 450,000 fans on her Facebook page.
Her website offers free money saving and couponing advice.
The mum-of-two currently holds the record for the biggest supermarket shop using coupons.
Last December she got £1,164.39 worth of shopping without spending a penny.
She told The Sun Online: “Do part of your shopping in bargain stores, such as Home Bargains and B&M, as they have a large range of grocery items at a fraction of the supermarket price.
“I stock up on items such as rice, tomato ketchup and baked beans.
“They have a brilliant of premium fresh meat. I am partial to the premium extra lean Irish beef steak mince myself – save over 50% on the equivalent in the supermarkets.”
