Festive fail?

Mumsnet user wants Christmas ad BANNED for giving the game away about Santa, but not everyone agrees

YES it is only October, but some people have already started thinking about Christmas.

They're not just checking out where to get the best festive bargains either, instead it's Christmas adverts which are whipping them into a frenzy.

It all started with a post on Mumsnet, where one user revealed their disgust at something they'd seen on the telly.

"I can't quite believe that an advert like this would have been allowed?" user Voteforpedr0 began.

"Park Christmas ad on the television this morning showing one family's Christmas eve at home, kids hang their stockings before bed then showing the mum filling them and eating the food left out for Santa/ Father Christmas.

"Then goes on to show the kids catching this happening, any one else think this will be too much of a give away if it's watched by believing children ? Just not necessary whatsoever I don't think."

Stepping things up a gear, the user later added: "It is awful I'm not sure how to go about making a complaint to the asa (Advertising Standards Authority)."

Most people post on Mumsnet to get reassurance about their worries, but sadly for Voteforpedr0 the replies were a pretty mixed bag.

The first declared most kids know Father Christmas isn't real before they're five, which didn't go down that well with some.

"They b***** don't!" Haroldplaystheharmonica said.

"All kids I know believed for much longer than we expected them to.

"I had to be the one to start dropping hints with my eldest and it was obvious he had no idea. He was over 10..."

This was the same for Thisagain, whose daughters knew until they were nine then started pretending they still believed just in case the gifts stopped.

Another user suggested the timing of the advert was the key, because if it was after 8pm when most little kids should be in bed there would be no harm done.

There was some backing for the concerned parent though, with user DocMcFanjo saying anyone who did a "Santa expose" was just a "Scroogey meany".

Most seemed to think the ad could be easily explained away to small kids, although one came at it from a different angle.

"Fair enough if you want to get your kids to believe in a myth, but a bit off to expect the rest of the world to creep around to keep up the lie!" fumed Muownprivateidaho.

Of course, the debate descended into something much more pressing - Mumsnet users discussed whether it was too early to be advertising Christmas at all.

The festive TV spot actually aired at the end of September, with many astounded that anyone is even thinking about the festive season already.

"The magic is ruined by adverts in September," one succinctly said.

So, what's your take? Is it too early to be chatting about Christmas, or are you already hoping to pick up a bargain?
