What a drag

Flavoured vapes are more dangerous … and one popular flavour is more toxic than the rest

The truth about the health risks of e-cigarettes and how they are affected by flavours, voltage and the age of your device

VAPING might be healthier than smoking a normal cigarette but it’s not without its health risks.

All e-cigs contain cancer-causing chemicals including formaldahyde.

And the danger level of your e-cigarettes can depend on various different factors, including how old the device is and the voltage.

But the most surprising factor that heightens the risk is the flavour you choose.

According to a new study published in the journal , the flavoured vapour varieties are much more toxic – and strawberry is the worst flavour of all.

Researchers exposed bronchial cells to five different flavours - piña colada, menthol, strawberry, coffee, and plain tobacco.

The tests showed that the chemicals used in flavoured vapours produced a higher level of "cellular toxicity” - and strawberry was the most toxic of all of them.

Upping the voltage of your e-cigarette will also up the risk.

The higher setting increases the amount of liquid you use and how warm the device gets and, according to the same study, it will significantly increase the nasty carcinogens you are breathing in.

Older devices also emit more toxins than new ones and the first puff you take has less nasty stuff that the last one in each session.

The scientists discovered that emissions increased up to ten times with each consecutive puff.

This is caused by the residue building up as the chemicals break down with each drag.
