But dog owners beware – apples can be fatal to your pet.

Too many of the fruit, and particularly the cores, can cause are dizziness, breathing problems  hyperventilation, shock, coma and even death.

That’s because the pips in apples contain the poison CYANIDE.

In small doses, this will be harmless but at this time of year windfall apples are everywhere and many dogs will eat as many as they can – core and all.

The toxic effects of the pips can kill dogs as big as a Labrador, and apple poisoning is incredibly common at this time of year.

It’s not just apples either.

Pears, plums, peaches and apricots also contain toxic stones.

So if you have fruit trees in your garden or walk your dog near fruit trees, make sure they can’t get at the apples and that you clear windfalls as often as possible.

Even an overflowing fruit bowl could be a problem if your dog is prone to stealing food.

If your dog has been eating apples and shows signs of illness, take it straight to a vet.
