The city, which has an "ever-lively arts and culture scene", tops travel website Airbnb's new list of the 25 cheapest European city breaks.

More familiar destination including Athens, Budapest and St Petersburg also make the cut, with a stay in Russia's second-biggest city costing as little as £28 a night.

Also listed are more off-the-beaten track locations such as Ljubljana in Slovenia, where a night's accommodation in a rented apartment can be had for a reasonable 36 quid.

The round-up comes on the same day as new research that suggests fears over terrorism and the fallout from Brexit haven't dampened Brits' desire for a foreign getaway.

But the popularity of beach breaks among UK holidaymakers has dropped by 12% because of chock-a-block resorts and a perceived terror threat, travel industry group Abta found.

Other cities on Airbnb's cheap list include Kiev in Ukraine (£28 a night), Belgrade in Serbia (£26 a night), and the German city of Leipzig (£32 a night).

Poland is the cheapest country to visit this autumn, with three entries (Warsaw, Krakow, and Wrocław) on the list.

The number of Brits taking a holiday at home or abroad soared from 77% to 86% in the 12 months to August, travel industry group Abta found - despite the pound taking a hammering following June's Brexit vote.

It is the highest figure since 2011, when 90% of people booked at least one break.

But the research also suggests the number of people taking a traditional beach holiday is in decline.

Experts claimed this was due to a combination of avoiding some resorts due to terror threats and other destinations being oversubscribed.

Thirty British holidaymakers were killed when ISIS gunman Seifiddine Rezgui Yacoubi opened fire at the Tunisian beach resort of Sousee in June last year.

Since the attacks the Foreign Commonwealth Office has advised against all but necessary travel to Tunisia, strangling the county's vital tourist industry.

Abta's director of brand and businesss development, Victoria Bacon, said: "The traditional popular beach holiday destinations Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey have obviously had difficult years,. either due to changes in Foreign Office advice or a percieved threat of terrorism, while some resorts in the western Mediterranean have been stretched to capacity over summer 2016.

"The survey suggests that British holidaymakers are willing to consider other types of holiday as an alternative to the traditional two-week beach vacation."
