That makes it perfect if your guests are round the corner and you want a more spooky theme. If you don't have any lamps then stick them on the windows too.

And if bats aren't your thing, you can make spiders, witches hats or stars.

You will need:

  • Black bin bags
  • Double sided sticky tape
  • Scissors
  • A lamp, light or window

Cost per lamp for five bats, 3p
Bin bags = 1p (£1.99 for a pack of 30 from B&M)
Double sided tape = 2p (£2 for 10m from Asda)

Method

Step 1
Cut out some rectangles from black bin bags and fold in half to create a square. These can be whatever size you want your shapes to be. Ours are roughly eight by for inches each for the biggest ones when flattened out, but creating different sizes looks nice when arranged together at the end.

Step 2
Stencil or cut freehand half a bat shape with the centre of your shape running along the fold line. Once cut, open out the bin bag along the fold to reveal your bat shape (or whichever other Halloween shadow you’ve decided on).

Turn on the lamp to see your shapes in all their glory. We used a selection of small and large bats to create the effect of a full sky full of creatures but you could try different arrangements. Clouds, stars and moons would all look good with the bats, too.

There are loads of ways to save money this Halloween and making your own decorations is the funnest and easiest way.

Just use items lying around your home to create the perfect atmosphere - without breaking the bank.
