IT was the most "painful speech" of her long political career, and one she had to postpone because she was too upset deliver.
But Hillary Clinton opened her Wednesday concession speech with words of unity and faith in the US democratic process after Donald Trump beat her in the race to the White House.
Known for her trademark pantsuits throughout the presidential campaign, Clinton wore a purple satin shirt and lapels which were punctuated by husband Bill’s matching tie.
Purple is known as a colour to encourage unity between the Republican and Democratic parties, which are represented by the red and blue of the American flag.
Swing states are often referred to as “purple states”, and Clinton addressed the battleground parts of the country that hung in the balance until the final hour of the election.
She said: “We have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought.
“But I still believe in America, and I always will.
“And if you do, then we must accept this result and then look to the future.
“Donald Trump is going to be out president and we owe him an open mind and the chance to lead.”

Clinton looked tired and upset and admitted her defeat was “painful” and that “it will be for a long time”.
She said: “This loss hurts. But please never stop believing that fighting for what is right.
“It is, it is worth it.”
Colour of clothing has been highly scrutinised throughout this election, especially Clinton's fashion choices.
Many noted in the debates she wore a red pantsuit, followed by a navy one and then a white one for the final debate.
Many women wore white on Election Day to honour suffragettes, including Trump's wife Melania who wore a white pantsuit.
