Energy postcode lottery reveals how your bills could be higher because of where you live
Your energy bill varies depending on where you live and if you’ve never switched then you could save £100s!
HOUSEHOLDS could knock a quarter off their energy bills by switching away from their traditional supplier, according to new data.
Customers in London could see the biggest potential saving of £313 - a reduction of 29 per cent.
While those in the East Midlands could save £298 and households in Yorkshire could knock £299 off their bills, according to research by MoneySuperMarket.com.
People living in the South West have the highest overall energy bill at £1,109 per year.
Although, their savings are one of the lowest they could still chop £252 a year off their bills by switching.
Rather than having one price for the whole of the country, energy firms set tariff prices based on where you live.
The 14 different regions relate to the way gas and electricity services were split before the energy industry was privatised in 1990.
Energy firms say that these the different areas are necessary because of the cost of distributing their supplies to households around the UK.

This means that some suppliers dominate certain regions, for example, nPower was most popular in the Midlands and Yorkshire and EDF in London and the south of England.
As half of all bill payers have never switched energy providers they are still with their conventional supplier, according to the regulator, Ofgem.
Stephen Murray, energy expert at MoneySuperMarket.com, said: “Bill-payers haven’t seen price cuts since January this year – and even then they were measly.
“For those who are still on a standard tariff with their incumbent supplier, there are huge savings of up to £359 to be had.
“Most switching can be done within 21 days, once customers have signed on the dotted line with their new supplier, so now is the time to do it.”
