'LL Cool J was big in the 1950s'

The Chase viewers mock contestant for thinking rapper had a hit 10 years before he was born

Army officer David confused the Hip Hop icon with 90-year-old crooner Tony Bennett

THE Chase viewers were left in stitches last night after a contestant thought rapper LL Cool J had a hit in the 1950s.

David, a father of four who lives in Andover, confused the 90s Hip Hop icon with 90-year-old crooner Tony Bennett.

In his opening chat with host Bradley Walsh, he told how he was hoping to win big to buy a bigger car for his newborn twins.

The army officer of 13 years described himself as an “average quizzer” – and he wasn’t being modest, as he only managed to earn himself £2,000 in his cash builder round.

His form improved as he took on Chaser Anne Hegarty, managing to make it home – just – after correctly answering which Coronation Street star was named 2015 Female Rear of the Year.

It was just David and Lou left to face The Chaser in the final chase to defend their prize pot of £6,000.

They managed to notch up 16 correct answers which as David pointed out, was “not bad for two people”.

David did himself proud, answering a number of questions correctly – until the very last one.

When asked by Walsh: “Who had a 50s number one with Stranger in Paradise?", David replied: "LL Cool J?"

He looked surprised as Walsh informed him it was in fact Tony Bennett - the "great Tony Bennett of course".

The #gangofchase flocked to social media to mock David's blunder.

One tweeted: "Stranger in Paradise? LL Cool J! First laugh out loud moment today" while another wrote: "LL Cool J was big in the 50s".

A bemused viewer joked: "To be fair it's easy to confuse LL Cool J with Tony Bennett."

Sadly the Chaser made light work of the duo with 23 seconds to spare, meaning David and Lou went home with nothing.

Last month we reported how football legend Harry Redknapp was teased after appearing on a celebrity edition of the show for getting a question about the beautiful game wrong.

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
