WHO KNEW? SANTA'S A GEORDIE

Iceland’s Christmas advert 2016 was held back until December to prevent “festive fatigue”

Nick and Sarah are self-confessed Christmas-a-holics and they are about to tuck into a festive Iceland spread

WHO knew Santa was a Geordie and had a pet dog named Snow? Iceland’s Christmas advert might just have won the battle for our hearts and smiles.

The supermarket has waited until December to launch its festive advertising campaign as bosses claimed customers are sick of seeing big budget ads from retailers from as early as November.

In the 60 second clip we meet Nick and Sarah Claus and their pet dog named Snow.

The self-confessed “Christmas-a-holics” have had a special delivery full of Christmas fayre.

Sarah says: “He’s working double shifts, all through the night, to get everything finished.”

Upon seeing the table full of food as he returns “in-between shifts” for some grub, Nick declares: “It’s champion”.

The advert finishes up with Mrs Claus admitting that she was unaware of the “power of frozen food.”

The video launched on the supermarket’s today, before hitting TV screens tomorrow morning.

The supermarket also holds off playing Christmas music in stores and puts up just minimal decorations in shops, helping people avoid “festive fatigue”.

In contrast, John Lewis unveiled its festive ad almost a month ago, along with Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl and Tesco.

Iceland's Joint Managing Director Nick Canning said: "The feedback from our shoppers was that no one actually wants to see a Christmas advert at the start of November.

"They want to enjoy Autumn and save the festivities until nearer the big day to avoid Christmas fatigue, so we've listened to them and taken the bold move to put our ad out and Christmas decorations up later.

"Our sales from last year showed that 56 per cent of our Christmas transactions don't take place until December itself anyway, so why hassle our customers for months beforehand?"

The frozen food specialist's Christmas advert is its first not to feature a celebrity, following its decision to part ways with recent celebrity ambassador Peter Andre in May.

Iceland recently beat stiff competition from 24 other brands, including Harrods and Selfridges, as its own brand mince pies, turkey and stuffing offerings took top honours in the annual Good Housekeeping Institute taste tests, while its Christmas pudding came second to M&S.

Iceland Head Chef, Neil Nugent said: "We know people like to push the boat out at Christmas and impress guests with luxury food and drink, so we've pulled out all the stops to ensure we are offering luxurious food and drink for less."
