During the study, researchers scanned the brains of 13 women and 11 men while they engaged in sexual acts.

While bare-footed only 50 per cent of the couples climaxed, while once 80 per cent felt the world move once the popped on a pair of socks.

Professor Gert Holstege suggested women in particular had a better time with socks on, going on to explain that women need to feel safe before they can relax into feeling ‘sexy’.

He added: “If you are fearful, it is very hard to have sex. It's very hard to let go.

"When you want to make love to a woman, you must give her the feeling of being protected."

Interestingly, men might want to keep their socks on – but their boxers off.

Dr Brian Steixner warned that blokes may risk getting fertility problems if they keep their pants on at night.

Dr Steixner, who is director of the Institute for Men’s Health at Jersey Urology Group, said sleeping in boxers or briefs can impact on the quality of sperm – all because of their crotch becoming too warm during the night.

He said: "Your nether regions need to be just the right temperature in order to optimise sperm production.

"More bacteria makes for a higher likelihood that any chafed or irritated skin down there becomes infected."

While many women need clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm, our brains plays a big part in pleasure for both women and men.

Our brain is where sensations such as pleasure and pain are experienced – even if it feels like we’re feeling it in our body.
