After Theresa May’s bold fashion statement, we ask who wears the trousers best?
The Prime Minister's unusual choice of clothing caused quite a stir, but she's not the only female celebrity rocking the leather look
PRIME Minister Theresa May’s dark brown leather trousers have caused almost as much of a stir as the Brexit negotiations.
Her decision to wear the £995 item for a photoshoot ignited debate about whether women can pull off the “leather look” at 60.
Here, The Sun on Sunday’s Deputy Fashion Editor GABRIELE DIRVANAUSKAS and Fabulous magazine Fashion Editor LYNNE McKENNA decide if Mrs May’s trousers get their vote.
They also look at other leading ladies electing to wear leather.
Theresa May
Gabi says: I DON’T believe a woman should retire her sense of style at any age – and I’d tell any other 60-year-old to go hell for leather if she felt like it.
But when you’re in charge of the country, baggy brown leather trousers aren’t the ideal outfit for a relaxed “at home with” photoshoot.
Smart, tapered trousers that slim down towards the ankle would have worked better for the occasion.
Lynne says: IT’S a brave statement to make – and the PM pulls it off.
Leather will outlast most fashion trends, making these trousers the perfect investment piece.
While Mrs May’s styling is not to everyone’s taste, she’s on-trend here.
She has chosen to dress the leather down with an oversized knit and trainers, making them the perfect weekend staple.
Rita Ora, 26
Gabi says: Rita looks good.
I love how effortless she appears in this wide-legged burgundy pair.
Lynne says: These baggy leather trousers are not to be worn if you are short.
This would not flatter the average person at all.
Carol Vorderman, 55
Lynne says: Carol transforms her trousers into a day outfit, teaming them with a great coat and biker boots to look laid-back yet stylish.
Elle Macpherson, 52
Gabi says: Elle manages to make smart casual uber-cool.
Her toned long legs definitely add to the success of this outfit.
Lynne says: Not an achievable look.
Elle would look great in anything but this could appear terrible on a mere mortal.
Ulrika Jonsson
Gabi says: These tight trousers teamed with an embellished top are all too tacky.
Ulrika needs to put these away.
Lynne says: She is slim, tanned and tiny, which makes a leather legging easy to wear.
This look makes her appear younger.
Mary Portas
Gabi says: The shopping guru styled her fitted leather trousers with a tailored blazer and relaxed shirt for a smart look.
Good work.
Lynne says: Mary is usually fashion fierce, but these would not look good at all without heels.
I’m not sure about this effort.
