Edinburgh, Tenerife and The Maldives were the top holiday searches on Google in 2016
The web giant revealed their top trends over the last 12 months and The Maldives came No.1 in the travel category, followed by Malaga and Tenerife
If Google searches are anything to go by, Edinburgh, New York and Malaga are set to be popular holiday spots in 2017.
The search engine has revealed the destinations that were most looked for by Brits over the course of 2016 and it turns out we’re an exotic bunch.
According to results published today, The Maldives were the most searched for destination in the UK over the last 12 months.
Celebrities including Katie Price, Dita Von Teese and and Fernando Torres have all been spotted in the tropical islands in recent years and the allure of the white sands and crystal clear waters is equally irresistible to the general public.
The second most popular destination on Google was Malaga, which has long been a favourite holiday destination for Brits thanks to its prime location on Spain’s Costa Del Sol.
In third place was another old Spanish favourite – the island of Tenerife, with its volcanic sand, colourful carnival and popular family resorts.
We aren’t just interested in foreign climates though –Edinburgh came in fourth place on the list.
The Scottish city is a big favourite among tourists for its historical buildings, boutique shopping and of course, whiskey-tasting.
Rounding out the top five was the city of New York, which has always been a favourite among Brits keen to get a shopping bargain while also indulging in the famous nightlife, tourist attractions and American cuisine.
Canada, Cape Verde, Florida, Fuerteventura and Mexico also featured in the top ten.
