Want to save money on your next flight? Book on a Sunday and pay 30 per cent less
A worldwide study into booking habits has shown how customers can save hundreds on their holidays
If you’re looking to save some money on next year’s summer holiday, it could be as simple as picking the right day of the week to book your ticket.
According to new research by Expedia, flights can be up to 30 per cent cheaper if you book them on a Sunday.
The booking website analysed billions of pieces of worldwide air travel data between January and October this year, to work out specific trends in airlines prices.
They found that in America, people flying domestically could save 11 per cent by booking on a Sunday, with savings rising to 16 per cent if they travelled to Europe.
For travellers flying inside Europe, savings of up to 30 per cent could be had if booking on a Sunday and for passengers flying within Asia, as much as 38 per cent could be saved.
Another big factor in driving down prices came when the customer booked a hotel and flight simultaneously.
This is because industry pricing rules allow ‘package’ bookings to be offered at a steep discount, often as much as £480.
One of the strangest causes for a price drop came from the magic ‘Saturday night sleepover’ though.
According to the study, most tickets including a Saturday stay offered the lowest prices and best
deals.
In Southern Europe, itineraries that included Saturday night stays could be up to 57 percent less.
The discount didn’t apply across the board though - in China and North Asia, for instance, Saturday night stays tended to be more expensive.
